Re: From the other collection
Silly thought (on absolutely no evidence), but could it simply be that, with the rapid expansion of the Army during the war, and the transformation of musical intrument makers; that this was a civilian item 'pressed into service'?

Re: Personal armour
The Germans also resorted to Long puttees. True, but the characters in the photographs all seem to be wearing American style (1908?) breeches, and shirts (not German pattern) and at least two seem to carrying Small Box Respirator bags. In addition, one wears 1910 gaiters and two are holding the Ame...

Re: Personal armour
I think you'll find that that kit was private purchase infantry equipment. Tank crews had enough to do trying to move around in an unsprung box with minimal room, so they wouldn't have wanted to be encumbered with armour. Apart from helmets (either steel, or the leather/fibre board contraptions) to ...

Re: Beamish Museum
As I recall, they have at least two buses on site, one an original pre Great War model (I can't remember its designation) and a replica "B" Type (the bus that went to war with the British Army in the Great War*) When I was there (several years ago) the trams weren't running for some reason...
