Research Projects

From time to time I receive queries about small arms by those studying the subject. Some of these are on-going data gathering projects leading to published results. I have set up a page on my web site to promote such studies. Current projects are: • Calisher & Terry Carbines • Small Arms of the ...

I paid more than that for one! It was platinum lined though and is used on my long range muzzle loading match rifle.

What you also need to consider is how you can get a consitent head position behind the sight when it is raised that high! :)

With regards to shooting the Enfield the article on Managing the Enfield on my web site is a good start.

Long Range Enfield

On Saturday 5 April the Long Range Rifles Branch of the MLAGB held their annual Asquith Cup match. This is an aggregate competition fired with Enfield muzzle loading rifles, 15 shots and 600 yards and 15 shots at 800 yards. Targets used are the standard NRA(GB) full-bore/high power rifle targets. Th...

The MLAGB holds stocks of targets at their ranges at Wedgnock, Warwick. No postal service available though. Non members can shoot on the ranges (50 firing points at 100m, 25 at 50m and 50 at 25m on three seperate ranges each with covered firing points!). Such targets should be readily available in E...

Do you need a UK source? The PL7 is the same as the ISSF 50 metre Pistol Target and is also used in MLAIC 25, 50 and 100m muzzle loading events where it has the designation C50. Just to be sure, dimensions are: 10 ring = 50 mm diameter, black centre out to 7 ring, measuring 200 mm , white out to 1 r...

I don't know where I finished yet. Vintage breech loader was OK - only the third time out with it at 900 yards. I was shooting a Deeley-Edge-Metford; this is an original action that has had a new stock and Metford barrel fitted. The lock is dated 1878 but is to the 1873 patent. It is chambered for t...

Nice pictures. I was there on Saturday and spent the afternoon on Stickledown shooting at 900yds in the muzzle loading and vintage breech loading rifle matches. A glorious day.

Long Range Fun!

Spent five days last week shooting long range at Bisley. There were two matches at the weekend and a group of us (varying from 9 to 12) met up for a few days earlier for some informal LR practice. We shot mornings only; Wednesday 600yds, Thursday 900yds, Friday 1000yds. Much of the time we shoot mat...

The oldest I have is a sporting flintlock rifle made by "'Christoph Ris in Wienn". Ris was working in Vienna 1732-57. He became an apprentice in 1732, master in 1745 and guildmaster in 1755. He ceased working in 1757 by handing over his workshop to his son-in-law Joseph Fruhwirth. The rifl...
