The P14 had a 26 inch barrel so I would be inclined to go with that as you are going for extra velocity.

I thought the reason they wanted the overall length back was that the SMLE with 1903 was to short for the infantry to defend themselves against mounted troops.

The Martini Metfords generally had a 33inch barrel as the Henerys had, but the Enfields had a 30inch barrel the same as the MLE.

Looking up some references - namely a series of articles by Ray McMahon in Caps and Flints - The No. 2 rifle was offered in about June 1896 along with the bolt safety (only as an option though). A very nice example of a BSA sporter - I would say the bolt is correct as that is how the early ones were and at a guess it is pre 1900 - certainly no later than 03 as it still has the patent acknowledgments.

I believe there is a difference in the length of the magazine well - the 30-06 being longer.
