Talk about a black sheep politician

There is a guy named Paul Gosar that is a Republican House of Representatives member from Arizona. He's running for re-election. Only he has a problem. His brothers and sisters support the Democrat running against him and don't mind advertising that fact. When a politicians own flesh and blood broth...

Minolta XG-1

A mid line camera from Minolta from 1979. Got it for bid of $3.50 on ebay. It came with a film winder...only the winder was made for Canon. Oh well... I wouldn't likely have used it if it were the right one. This Camera is really made for aperture priority. It will shoot in full manual ...but the li...

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

The National Security Action committee was one of the original political action groups on a national scale. They were among the first agenda focused organizations to use the money they collected in large amounts to sway elections. They started out as what we today would think of as a right wing drum...

The National Rifle Association and latest news

It seems like the NRA not only buys and supports certain Republican politicians but it gets so carried away with it that it has given away a lot more money than it has been taking in. In fact, it is reported that they gave away 54.4 million to Republicans in 2016. Of that total 31.2 million went to ...

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

The next daily news reveals a flood of new Spanish Flu victims in the US starting to show up. The most dramatic thing about the epidemic is that it is killing the young and healthy adults more than the older, and seemingly more likely to die from such an epidemic. This apparently hasn't struck home ...

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

If the war wasn't bad enough killer, there was a new one just getting started. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84026749/1918-09-20/ed-1/seq-1/ The 1918 influenza pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920; colloquially known as: Spanish flu) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the firs...

Actually.... I have two military compasses with "tritiated" paint on markers inside the glass and on the compass arrow. Had one in Vietnam back in 1970 and I haven't died yet.

Tritium watch anyone?

I got something for my birthday. One of my petty annoyances is when I'm cooking something on the BBQ at night if I want to check to see if it's time to turn something over or not I have to get out of the porch swing hung in an A frame and walk over to the patio light to see what time it is. Well.......

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

Here's a second post today since this struck me as reflective of modern news. One New York paper had an editor that went off his nut and killed his wife and left a note that he was going to kill himself. It was on the front page of a rival New York newspaper. However the editor story didn't make the...

Re: Bayonets

Interesting post, Peter. Reminded me of a bayonet I got with an order from, I think, Century some years ago. It was free with whatever it was I ordered that had no relationship to the knife. And... it doesn't fit any rifle I own. It was made by the Spanish for their CETME Model C military rifle. If ...

Re: Tool for tinkering with old cameras.. and some other things

That's pretty neat. Had a discussion on a camera repair page. They made fun of my Chinese tools. Bet they wouldn't make fun of those tools...if the points would go into the tool holes on a camera.

Looks like a bargain price. Also looks like a pretty old gun. Found this site. Read down a few posts and a guy, Derek, gives his version of the company history.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

The Bernie Sanders of his day, Eugene V. Debs was a Socialist activist who was against the war and the draft. That got him arrested, tried and sentenced to ten years in prison. His sentence was commuted after three years in prison. "Disloyal utterances". Wonder what the people of that time...

Duncan, I think I sprayed the darn cap too many times with the blaster bolt loosener. Now I notice residue on the inside of the camera ...including the shutter curtains. Oh well......$10 camera. I've tried tapping it with various objects. I've tried filing an old screwdriver tip to the width and cur...

That's really sharp with apparent excellent color replication. I don't think any camera, at any price or configuration, could have done better. Good shot. If I took a photo, just as technically good, of a case of beer I'm pretty sure I couldn't talk the owner into letting me keep the case in a milli...

Tool for tinkering with old cameras.. and some other things

I got the standard Lens Spanner Wrench Repair Tool with the parallel points on one end and equally parallel straight edges on the other. I had seen what looked to be the same tool for sale with ends that bent inward toward each other and couldn't see why a defective tool was being offered. Then I ha...

How unpatriotic can you get? A baseball Worlds Series pay players strike. Now days players make something like a third of a million each for playing in a World Series beyond their already fat contract pay checks.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

America loves to sacrifice ...particularly when it comes to sin. Beer is sin of course. America has that old Pilgrim spirit....even when it puts a shuts down taxes collected for the war they seem to be sacrificing for.
