Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

US troops take the brunt of the first wave of the new offensive. The American 3rd Division holds under attack from nearly overwhelming numbers of Germans and earns it's ever after sobriquet of "Rock of the Marne". Although American newspapers wouldn't know this unit designation until proba...

Re: D.O.W.

After further thought, I think maybe I had that battery notice of shot out wrong. Maybe they did say "Shot, over" and the FO said "Shot , out". And then, if you asked for splash they would give you a "splash, over". Crap... that was nearly a half century ago and I can't...

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

Most munition plant fatalities are caused by explosions. Somebody lighting a match in a powder room sort of thing. This accident was at least a different form of unforeseen circumstance. And ...nothing exploded.

Re: D.O.W.

With a fire mission there was a formula for how it was called in and what you had to tell the battery..like what you were shooting at, if it was a contact mission, the grid, observer target line, first round WP 200 up, what kind of rounds, fuse quick or delay, how many rounds in adjustment and how m...

Re: D.O.W.

It was also according to form for the ranking party to the conversation, at least in the American Army, to be the one to say "out". The inferior didn't hang up on the superior. So... assuming the king was the superior.. why was the Duke giving the "out"?

Re: Soccer games??

Those kids who made it out of the cave have my applause and respect. The World grown up semi match champs of the recent games don't. Talk about bad sportsmanship in a game that kids play. They should take up professional wrestling where trash talking is all part of the buildup to the next match to s...

If you don't have the right ethnicity and someone shoves a flag in your face and pins it to your vehicle... you tend to get pissed ...and then we have an incident. My great grandfather on my mother's side was German. He was an engineer who built ice making plants and put elevators in the first relat...

Lots of kids play soccer now in the US. My grandchildren have started out in the toddler league. When I was a kid I thought it was something a PE teacher thought up to get through a gym class.

England will play Croatia in the semi-final on Wednesday night on ITV That's after 20 million watched England get by Sweden. Croatia? How many professional soccer players do you think there are from Croatia anyway? Must be all of them on the team. How hard could beating them be? Wonder if they have...

The famous Konica C35 EF

"The sun never sets on a Konica C35 EF". It was the first compact camera with a built in automatic flash. Time frame 1975. No flash cubes, bulbs or add on flash. Flash worked on two penlight batteries. The exposure meter worked on a mercury button cell battery. There were four focus bracke...

Re: I put a deposit on my first gun show table.

Good advice Englishman. I know you can't go up from the price you offer but only down in any price negotiation. On the other side of the coin you can't appear to be too greedy either. I've passed by a lot of offerings at gun shows that looked to me to be way out of line as an asking price. Saw a cou...

Re: I put a deposit on my first gun show table.

In Alabama, private owner sales don't require a background check. In Alabama the basic rules are that if you don't have any reason to suspect the buyer isn't allowed to buy a weapon you assume he is. You have to be careful to avoid straw purchases or anything you think may be a straw purchase. You a...

Re: I put a deposit on my first gun show table.

Duncan, I can use any such hints as you suggest. At the moment I know I need to tag each one. No problem in replacing the ones I have on all of my collection now. I still have lots of tags. I know I'll have to have some change and I know to ask round numbers.... no $126.95 sort of prices. I will hav...

I put a deposit on my first gun show table.

I reserved a table at an upcoming gun show. It's the first I'll ever have been to on the reverse side of the table. I'm not nervous about the selling part.... I spent most of my adult life selling things on commission. But I find myself getting a little nervous running over the plan of action in my ...

Just don't get the bullets mixed up when loading. I've gone to the range a time or two and had the chilling thought that I might accidentally confuse some very similar rounds when loading. 8mm, 308, 30.06... all look pretty much alike.

Re: Can't help myself....

Vern, the Curio & Relic arguments weren't over high dollar guns. They were over $50 Turk Mausers or equally inexpensive Mosin Nagants. The guys doing the arguing were guys who a year before couldn't tell you which was which without guessing if you had showed them an example of each. But....if so...

Joe, he must have seen the purest collector rants. I used to be like that. I've reformed myself and learned to be more forgiving. At the same time it used to be one of those C&R license things where people would split hairs over what does and does not violate the rule that collectible weapons ar...

Re: 8000 Surplus military 1911 45. pistols to CMP

I think the problem is that the CMP has gotten greedy.....or the gun lobby has put a hitch in their giddy up. Or...maybe......US military collectible gun inflation is going up faster than a hot air balloon at a risk your life festival. Did a quick look and I bought a M1 Garand in good, tested, shipp...

Maybe those marks on the wall were caused by a canon. Back in the day it was called grape shot. "Wooden plates with a wooden core in the middle around which a great number of lead shot were stuck with tar and pitch." From Guns, an illustrated history, by E. Egg, J. Jobe, H. Lachouque, P. E...

Indoor ranges with rifle distances don't exist where I'm from. Remember Dutch Mosin's 100 meter range in Holland? http://www.milsurpafterhours.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=10800&p=47344&hilit=Dutch+range#p47344 Seems like with all that construction they could have built some benches doesn...
