Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army

Great. I didn't get a chance to go to the range to try my Remington out. Looks like you are ready for Freddy.

The Ansco Craftsman

The 1950 kit box camera. Boy Scout magazine advertised them as $3.50 and you could construct it yourself. A simple box camera that made eight 6x9mm negatives on 120 film. Simple lens. Shutter of one speed...depending on how strong the spring was....about 1/30. The Aperture is reported to be about a ...

Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army

Just took a photo ...like yours...of my 1858 New Army with . 451 balls. Looks a lot like what you show. Maybe half the diameter of the ball showing. I know the .451 works in mine just fine. There will be a manufacturer recommendation somewhere. Might be online some place if you look a while. A sligh...

Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army

If the loading tool on the bottom of the revolver presses them in past the opening of the chamber and they are tight....that's the test. Nothing under them in the photo? The loaded ball when over powder will be well under the lip of the face of the chamber. You want the powder in first. Then the wad...

Re: The bigger the sensor the less noise in digital

Nothing is really simple and straight forward about what to look for in a camera. Depends on what you want a camera for really. The size of the sensor means something for detail in large print use and also can give better light gathering results in low light but it is only one factor. My Canon Sures...

Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army

The ball size depends on the maker. Most use .451. Iv'e seen advertised some that use .454. If the guy who gave you the gun used 440 maybe that's the right size. See how tight they fit. Seems a bit small to me. On a .44 cal reproduction I like lighter target loads at 20 grain. I've used powdered Pyr...

You got them all in the black. I'd be happy with that result... particularly on first try with some roll your own ammo.

What do you think about the peep sight, relative to the Enfield Mark 4's and 5's?

Did you try shooting it with the bayonet out?

Musket wrench and pistol-rifle wrench. And traditional pistol wrench.

Musket wrenches are for bigger nipples than what is on a 1858 New Army pistol.

A human interest story. A continuing feature of a newspaper spot lighting a father and son ....or grandson...who both served their country. Sweet. But.... think about this pairing for a minute. Think about what side old pap was on. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84026749/1918-08-13/ed-1/s...

Vern if you listen to me and Duncan you will probably get confused as we don't exactly gee haw and are both opinionated as hell.....but it doesn't bother either of us if anyone plots a different course on any issue from what either of us suggest. Think we both would agree on that. No matter. You are...

Saving the environment

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment. The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."...

Well...ok. The top shelf are trumpets. The middle shelf are cornets. Notice the spelling of "cornet". And yes it is a lot like Duncan's old find the difference post. But the only difference is the resolution...and moving the rocker with the blue back cushion...and the standing lamp shade o...

Well...this is a friendly discussion and I remain unconvinced of your point of view that weighing a BP load serves any added value over a thrown powder load. I follow the BP guru Sam Fadala. At least in his book he offers an explanation that suggests he did some empirical tests before he came to his...

Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army

Chain fires are more often..so I have read....caused by percussion caps coming off the nipple in adjoining chambers to one discharging than through the front end. However, If the percussion cap seems loose on the nipple squeeze the edge of the cap slightly and it will grip the nipple better. Even if...

You can speed up the loading if you had a flask and the right size spout for the load you are going to be using. What you see in the photo is a 20 grain spout. They come multiple sizes. With the powder in the flask and the right size spout screwed in, you invert the flask with your finger over the e...

Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army

If you paid $60 for all of that in the photo you did real good. Those wonder wads are used in place of a lot of grease to prevent chain fires. The 1858 is one of the strongest designs and should be a great shooter.

The bigger the sensor the less noise in digital

I like smaller pocket able cameras. A good camera is a good camera and if you aren't going to make very large prints it probably doesn't make any difference how large the sensor in your camera is. However, if you want a large image, for printing in particular, a larger sensor is good to have. I took...

Re: FujiFilm X-E3

Considering the size of the sensor it ought to be really super. The down side would be that the lens is detachable and accordingly limiting to what you can buy for it. I wanted a pocketable digital to replace one I had a long time that had developed a problem. After reading online about various ones...

Looks like at least a few of the serial numbers match. Don't see any pitting in the metal shown. That's a good sign of previous storage history. Now all you got to do is put it back together again...
