Re: Painted finish on Berthier carbine.

Well apparently they started parkerizing rebuilt carbines in the 30's. Here was a response to a question a poster had on his carbine which was rebuilt with a 1939 dated barrel. Doesn't answer the stoving question but does show they didn't always blue rebuilt rifles but parkerized some. Just a though...

"A Wish To Live Forever"

Saw this on another site, thought it was funny, Ray "A Wish To Live Forever" I met a fairy today that said she would grant me one wish. "I want to live forever," I said. "Sorry," said the fairy, "I'm not allowed to grant wishes like that!" "Fine," I ...

Greek alteration of a Berthier rifle to carbine

In the early 1930's the Greeks altered about 3,000 M1907/15 Berthier Rifles to Carbines and also altered bayonets for these Carbines. Here is one of the altered rifles that was made into a carbine. It still retains it's straight bolt and there is a different number #3226 stamped on the right side of...

Re: Pattern 14

Just love that rifle and especially with the volley sights still there. I've been looking for one like it. What a beauty. Thanks for showing it, Ray

Re: Painted finish on Berthier carbine.

Duncan, just curios but did you ask your source specifically if it was possible that if a Berthier was arsenal refinished in the 30's if they could have received stoving. and not just if all Berthiers were blued, as we know they all originally were. However it seems that if the the arsenal was stovi...

Re: My three MAS 36 rifles

Nice looking rifle, and it's still stoved which means made pre war. I wish I would have been interested in these rifles years ago when they were going for those prices. They still are not that expensive but not the price they were back then. No import marks on any of mine and the bayonet number on o...

Re: Painted finish on Berthier carbine.

Berthiers were all originally blued but stoving was used for the MAS 36's rifles at least by the mid 1930's and it's not inconcievable that if the original bluing/finish of your Berthier was very worn, and it was arsenal refurbished during that period, that they may have stoved it. That is just a gu...

My three MAS 36 rifles

Here's my three original condt MAS 36 rifles, Two pre-war ones, a 1939 and a 1940 one, and one called a Mystery rifle as it is unknown exactly when it was made but most likely either just before the German occupation in June 1940 or just after for Vichy use or secretly for the resistance. The only m...

Re: Painted finish on Berthier carbine.

much1, I have three prewar MAS 36 rifles and they all have the black paint finish referred as "stoved". I believe they continued to use that finish up to the later 1940's. I'm not sure when they started to use that type of finish but I imagine if your rifle's finish was well worn, and went...

Re: So you think you are a collector?

Woltam, Your abbreviations are correct, sorry I forgot that all countries are represented on this forum. And you're also right that the Rev war was a major war. I didn't think of it because there would be no way on this earth I would be able to get an original uniform from that period to set up a ma...
