I just wish that I had known of what JFW posted a couple years ago! Oh well, learn the hard way, I guess.
I went overboard on Neetsfoot Oil on a couple of leather ammo pouches and slings and still regret it each time I look at them.

They look like Mosin-Nagants to me.
Maybe Finns?

BST
Back in April of 1986, I flew into London's Gatwick airport. Unfortunately, it was on the same day that daylight savings time started. No two clocks in the terminal were on the same time zone. Even the pilot upon landing stated that he had no idea of what local time it was because everybody was argu...

Sporterizing or Restoring
What happened to the butt plate? I can see what a lot of people did to bubbasize a rifle, but removing the butt plate?? That one's got me. You will find that almost all the Argentine rifles have the crown ground off. Just like the Japanese Arisaka rifles. Unground ones CAN be located, but just havin...

Sporterizing
Dante- You say you got a sporterized rifle and you want to scope it. Just how extensive is the sporterization on it? I think it would depend of whether or not the rifle could be restored to original configuration. If it would take a new stock, original sights, straightening a bent bolt handle, and t...

Re: Reread this post
Dante- does your handguard match the color of the stock? For some reason unknown to me, it seems that a lot of 98/22's have mis-matched handguards. Three of mine have lighter colored handguards, so I would assume that some sort of general handguard replacement program must have been going on sometim...

Nope.
Does not have that many hot days here where I live. And that takes too much time. I have heard of others doing it, but not around here. I agree with you and the dislike of mixing stocks with water. I use water, but sparingly and it has to be boiling water so it evaporates quickly so the wood does no...

Stock Cleaning
Dante- I have had several rifles like yours. I wanted to put on rubber gloves just to pick them up. What I use is a degreaser called Carbo-Sol that I get at the local True Value Hardware store. It works really good and it is (to me) the best degreaser since the trichlorethylene (can pronounce it, bu...

Steaming out dents
Steaming out dents that way usually works fine, if the dent is not too deep and the grain of the wood is broken. I think you have the right idea to check it on a small part of the stock first. I have often wondered if it made much a difference as to what type of wood it was. Seems that some woods ha...

Cleaning of stocks
Dan- I don't know about you, but I would be afraid of doing more harm than good to the stock. Most of the milsurps have been stored for years with a thick coating of cosmoline, which effectively seals the wood in the stock from the ingress of moisture. Thus the wood under that cruddy layer is dry. I...
