The country that avoids war and the country that fights but has a hard time winning have been combined. The Swiss made some excellent firearms and the French made some unique and occasionally inspiring ones. We have added the Belgian and Dutch since they are neighbors.

Ha! You notice that the only military kit there is my Nº4, a Nº5 and a Nº8
Still, the hospitality is French

Am I having hallucinations, or is the guy in the picture showing the 700 meter marker shooting an Enfield No. 8?
Of course not, it must be an Enforcer/distractor/rejector or whatever they call the things!
Just one of my daydreams - to see how far one can shoot with a No. 8 and still hit the black. Could be about 300 meters on a windless day.
I have a French trainer in 22 short. The sight is calibrated to 200 meters, and I tried it out once, in France (there are no 200 m ranges in Germany). Well, it hit the black. Grouping? What grouping?
The No. 8 is close to 1 MOA at 100 meters. The black at 200 should be no challenge, one might even get a group. But 300? That would be interesting.

Patrick!
The Noº.8 Mk 1 was shooting at 300 mtrs and getting consistent blacks on a 200 mtr target! Next shoot is on April 4th and I will be taking the owner some info on his rifle from my copy of "British .22RF Training Rifles" Wish I had one to play with!!!

Ok, so I was wearing my calibrated eyballs after all. 300 meters for a 22 must be ballistically equivalent to about 800 with a BPCR, if you scale everything, so hitting the 200 meter target at 300 is pretty good. What ammo was used? And was the rifle fitted with a backsight as used on a No. 4? (There's no range markings to help you set the sight at that distance on the normal No. 8 backsight.)
Now that I now it can be done, I would like to try it myself. But there are no 200 meters ranges in Germany - it seems to be common only in France - so I will have to go "cold" from 100 to 300 meters. I would very much like to know what elevation was required on the backsight.

Can't give you any more info Patrick as I don't have it to hand. I will try and check it out next month if the guy is there.
In the mean time here is a close up pic of the sights which appear to be the No.4 Mk 1 which was modified to 25, 50 & 100 yard settings.
Best I can do at the moment mate!

I guess we are fortunate to belong to a club where we can shoot out to 600 yards pretty much any day that there isn't an organized shoot being held.
Our GMRS radios get a workout when we shoot at 600. It's a bit of a pain, one in the pits and the other shooting. It's better if you have 4, 2 shooting, and 2 pulling targets. You couldn't see 30 cal holes at 600 yards with the Hubble telescope. I have enough trouble seeing .223 holes at 200 yards, especially in the black with a dirt berm behind.

Thanks Joe, I had it previously but lost it and been looking ofr it for a while. Nothing being easy I initially got an access forbidden message and had to backtrack to the main site and navigate the german language menus

The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.
