George Patton called the M1 Garand "the finest infantry rifle ever created". Developed in 1936, the M1 is a gas-operated, semi-automatic rifle. It is fed from an eight round clip that is automatically ejected from the rifle when the last round is fired.

The M1 was the primary US military rifle during WW II and Korea and served until replaced by the M-14 in the mid 1950's. I was issued an M1 during basic training at Ft Knox, KY and AIT. The basic M1 design was retained in the M-14.

"...replaced by the M-14 in the mid 1960's..." The M-1 was replaced in the mid 1950's. The M-14 was replaced by the M-16 in the late 60's.

I know for sure this one was posted here before the big ezboard meltdown. I got it from the CMP. A Springfield made in October of 1943. This one made a trip to Denmark for a while.

Looking M1's. I guess I'm going to have to pull mine out and give it a little TLC. Haven't had it out of the case since the move in December, 04.

Thanks for joining us. Get that Garand our and join in out little internet shooting match (See Milsurp After Hours forum).

A Garand in the closet is a mighty lonely Garand. Get it out and apply a lot of TLC quickly.

I sure miss my M1.I had a post WW2 arsenal rebuild that was as good as new in all respects. Unfortunately it became a victim of the Great Aussie Gun Grab when the Govt. banned all semi-autos for us ordinary shooters.

Eoin.

...wish I could afford more...
