New Smith Corona 03A3
New Smith Corona 03A3
I won this Smith Corona 03A3 and a 1903 MKI at an on-line estate sale. From the auction pics and description, it looked and sounded pretty original.
Description was as follows:
Serial no. 4821170, .30-06 cal., 24" barrel, parkerized finish with some blued parts, walnut stocks. "SC" marked bbl. is dated "11-43" with Ordnance bomb stamp. Stock cartouched "Ordnance Wheel" & "FJA". Circled "P" proof on lower grip. With original site hood and later military issue nylon sling.
These are the auction pics--will post better when it arrives

Another good score. Now you have an 03 and a 03A3. Nice set.
By the way, when you have photos to link that are larger than 800 pixels use the "pic" button to link rather than the "img" button. That way they resize. I edited your post to do this, which was no problem. The edit used the pic command.

Outstanding CalFed!
You should love your typewriter as much as I love mine.
Mine is a refurbished mixmaster, but It wears a "C" stock & bears Elmer Keith's initials.

Very nice.
I need a barreled action to build me a rifle. I have all the other parts.

indeed , she is a beauty , you did well on this one
Re: New Smith Corona 03A3
Thanks, guys. the rifles are supposed to arrive at my FFL dealer tomorrow. They will then go into the vault for 10 days before I get them. I'll at least get to examine them though, before they go in.
Re: New Smith Corona 03A3
The Smith Corona arrived today at my FFL. Before it went into the safe for the 10 day waiting period, I got a look at it.
The bore is shiny, sharp and gauged between a "0" and "1" on the CMP muzzle gauge. The action will not close on a Clymer field gauge.
The barrel is marked "SC" and dated 11-43.
The stock has a 1/2" "P" stamp near the trigger guard. There are also numerous small cartouches just in front of the trigger guard on the underside of the stock. There are FJA and crossed cannon cartouches on the left side of the stock, near the bolt handle. I could not find any arsenal cartouches on the stock, although I might have missed them. There were a few other stock cartouches.
The stock had rounded cut outs for the barrel band.
The bolt is blued and has a indistinct "x" stamped on the bolt handle. The barrel bands, butt plate, swivels, trigger guard, bolt collar and other bolt parts and magazine cut off are all blued.
The trigger guard has a curved stamping near the front screw hole. The butt plate has the larger cross hatching pattern.
I'll post better pics in 10 days when I can pick it up.

Re: New Smith Corona 03A3
I picked up the "new" S/C 03A3 and 1903 MK1 today. I took some pictures of them. Found a little surprise in the butt of the 03A3--a nice cleaning kit.
Here's the S/C 03A3

I can't find any indication that it has been through the arsenal. Anything I need to be looking for?

Re: New Smith Corona 03A3
I've had several 03A3 rifles that have been through rebuild, and there's usually initials of an Arsenal or an inspector near the Cartouche under the magazine cut-off.
Culver's Shooting Page would be a good place to ask this.
