A pair of 44s

Post by PeterN2 » Tue Sep 27, 2005 3:51 pm

I took a few quick pics tonight just before it got dark af My Arisaka Type 44 and my Polish made Mosin-Nagent M44. They are very similar in many ways but the Arisaka pre-dates the MN M44 by more than 30 years, being introduced in 1911. I wonder if the Russians used the Arisaka as a model to copy from? The Arisaka has the bayonet folded under the stock instead of down the side as on the MN 44. A few pics.

Peter, can you get ammo for the Arisaka or is it reloading only?

Reloading only

Post by PeterN2 » Sat Oct 08, 2005 5:15 pm

Norma makes 6.5 Japanese but it is soft point only and not imported into the UK. I got some original military ammunition from Henry Krank but it is not reliable and really for collecting, not shooting.

I made my cases from .220 Swift. There is an alternative of using .35 Rem so I will try those next time. A firm in the USA, Graf & son, has had 6.5 and 7.7 Japanese cases and loaded ammunition made that is much cheaper than Norma. The UK agent is Reloading Solutions, so I may get them to order me a couple of hundred 6.5 cases. 7.7 Japanese is no problem as Roding Armoury have Norma cases in stock. A cheaper method is to use 7.92x57 cases. That is just a resize in the 7.7 die and load and shoot. I am taking both the above rifles to the range tomorrow and if the shoot goes OK both will be going to the Trafalgar Meeting in a couple of weeks time.

Mosin Nagant M91-30 = 1891 M-44 and chinese mosin nagant T-53 based on MN M1891 which was 20 years before Arisaka = maybe Japanese copied Russian model???? how about mosin nagant 1907 carbine?? 4 years before Arisaka 1911......
you could be on the right track tho' :D

I was just comparing those two particular models regarding age. I know the 7.62mm Nagent type predates the 6.5mm Arisaka by about seven years. The Type 30 Arisaka dates from 1897 and the Type 38 from 1905. I like them both.

Peter, I use to make a swadge die to run a 308 0r 7.62x51 case through it and then it would size in a regular 6.5 Japanese sizing die. Would that be of any help to you. If so I could make you one and send. I was making and selling them before Graf and others started making the 6.5 cases. Now not much need for it unless you can get those cases. I must have sold 75 to 100 sets.

You already made me one. I have used it to swage .243 Win cases to make 6.5mm Japanese. It works great as I can now shoot the Type 38 rifle and carbine with the cases not bulging. The Type 44 has a tighter chamber and I have been using the Prvi Partisan cases in that. They don't bulge much but I will make up a batch of cases for that using your die. Thanks again.
