In the early 30's the Japanese started a sniper program. They made snipers out of existing T38 rifle, several hundred for testing. This one is one of eight know to exist our of that lot.

Can someone tell me why my avatar covers up part of my message? And can you fix it for me. Thanks, Roy

That's really a special rifle you have there Riceone. Like to read more about it.

As to the screen problem, I think the problem is at your end. It looks fine to me on all three skins. Try reloading the frame.

Niner, the only difference I can see between the T38 sniper and the T97 is the base attached to the left side of the rifle. Also the Arsenal mark and serial numbers are done away with when the side was machined for the block. Type 38 is still on top of the receiver and the new serial number is stamped on the top edge of the sight base. This base is held on by six screws and two dowel pins. The T97 base is held on by four screws and two dowel pins. The T97 was adopted in 1937. riceone

As good a shape as it is in from the pictures, I would guess it was never issued as a service weapon. What do you think? Maybe stuck in a safe at their R&D facility for the duration of the war?

I think it set the war out in a case too. Inside the receiver looks brand new. The onl y wear on the blue is where the end cap touches the barrel on the underside at the front band. No other place is there a blemish. Its an interesting rifle.

The T38 bolt was modified for the 7.7 conversion. I do not know which was done first as its my understanding that the 7.7 conversion and the T38 sniper program was done about the same time. The rear lug is trimed on both sides (front and back) Nothing else seems to have been changed. This was done because of the lengthening of the bottom of the receiver and magazine box to accommodated the longer 7.7 cartridge.
