Re: Pet loads

Postby Barry in IN » Mon Jun 15, 2009 9:35 pm

Old thread, nut I'm new and the more listings on a pet loads list the better.

Most are milsurp-type rounds but some are not.

.223/5.56
55 grain bullet and 26.5 grains of Win 748 ... or... same amount of Varget
69 grain bullet and 24.5 Varget (This was my Highpower match load until my crippled-up back forced me to quit)
For all the .223 I've shot, I have honestly not experimented much. It's a case of finding loads that work great early on, and not messing around any more.

.220 Swift
55 grain bullet and 38.0 IMR 4064
3800 fps in a Ruger 77V

.300 Savage
150 Hornady SP and 44.0 IMR 4350
110 Sierra HP and 42.5 IMR 4895 (Varmint load- 2700 fps in a Savage 99)
I haven't had this rifle long, but that is where I'm at now with favorite loads.

.308/7,62x51
145-147 FMJ and 44.5 grains Varget (more or less military load that shoots well)
41.0 H322 with 150 Ballistic Tip (A little hot in some rifles)
155 nosler Match BTHP and 44.5 Varget. (Accurate load)
130 Hornady and 50.0 Win 748 (Fast varmint load, usually right at 3000 fps)
175 Sierra BTHP MatchKing and 43.0 Varget (AR10 likes it)
180 SP with 42.5 Varget or 4895

.30-06
145-147 and 47.5 IMR 4895 (military-ish load)
155 nosler BTHP Match and 47.0 IMR 4895
180 cast (I used RCBS 180-FN gas check) and 37.0 IMR 4350 (about 1950 fps)
This is another round that I have not experimented with considering how much of it I've shot. I had plenty of military ammo to shoot up, and the .30-06 is so easy to load for that little testing is needed.

.303 British
150 Speer and 44.0 IMR 4064...or...38.0 IMR 4895
100 Hornady XTP (.32 revolver bullet) and 40.0 IMR 4064 (Nice mild play load)
I have a mild goofing around load using the 123 grain 7.62x39 bullet, but don't see it right now.
I have not loaded much for the .303, but I like those.

.348 Winchester
200 Hornady SP and 61.0 IMR 4350 (2345 fps from a 20" barreled Browning 71).
200 cast (from MT Bullet Works using RCBS custom mould) and 35.0 IMR 3031 (accurate and mild at 1940 fps, but hits much lower than above load)

.375 H&H Magnum
300 Hornady and 76.0 IMR 4350
265 cast and 34.0 XMP5744 (accurate, runs about 1850 fps)

45-70 (Springfield Trapdoor- Black Powder)
500 cast (Saeco 022) and 70 grains of FFg, ,020" think card wad (punched from milk carton with chamfered 45 Colt case). Duplicates 1881 military load.
385 cast (Lyman 457124) and 70 grains FFg, 020" card wad over powder. Duplicates early BP military load. Not as accurate as 500 grain in my rifle, but a little milder to shoot and hits closer to point of aim at 100 yards.

45-70 (Marlin)
300 JHP (R-P bulk bullets are cheaper, but Hornady is a little more accurate) and 51 grains of IMR 3031. (Accurate "playing around" load.)
400-405 cast and 27.5 XMP5744 (Another "playing around" load. Close ballistically to early black powder load, about 1340 fps)
425 cast LBT and 45.0 IMR 3031 (Not the stiffest load by any means, but no pussycat either)

Pistol, military calibers****************************************************

9mm
I like 125 grain bullets. It is in the range of the old military loads and is the middle ground between 115s and 147s.
I also try to keep in a "respectable" velocity range for a given bullet weight. A 115 at 900 fps may shoot great, but I have no interest in experimenting there.
My favorite bullet is the Hornady 124 FMJ Flat Point designed for the USAF. Pretty accurate bullet, but sometimes hard to find and always more expensive than the bulk 125 FMJ or cast I usuallly buy to burn up.

I've been using Zero FMJ or Precision Bullets (a polymer coated lead bullet) as general practice bullets, but am starting to cast my own.

The most accurate load I've used with 125 bullets is 5.0 grains of VihtaVouri N330. Shoots great in the Browning HiPowers and HK P7 I shoot most of my 9mm ammo through.
TiteGroup, with a charge weight of around 4.0 to 4.2 grains was right behind N330 for accuracy. It is cheaper and easier to find than N330, so I'd have to really need (and be able to use) the accuracy difference to buy more N330.
Power Pistol is about even with Tite Group accuracy-wise and gives more velocity. But it uses more powder (a little over 6 grains I think) so I can load almost 600 more rounds from a pound of TiteGroup. But if I needed the extra velocity, I would use Power Pistol.
But the powder I use most for 9mm is none of those. I use Winchester 231 for 9mm because it does almost as well as the above powders, AND I like it best in 45ACP. I can use one powder for both, which simplifies purchasing and might help prevent a mix-up sometime.
I use 4.4 or 4.5 grains of W231 with a 125 bullet. It runs around 1100 fps from a HiPower. That is in the area of standard pressure 9mm ammo, has enough recoil to feel right, makes Minor power factor in IDPA and IPSC with room to spare (It makes 137.5 and 125.0 is required), and works in the SMG (S&W 76).

45 ACP
230 grain bullet (cast or jacketed) and 5.5 grains of Winchester 231
200 grain cast SWC and 5.8 grains of Win 231
That's all I need.
