Cut Off Dies

Postby BOLOMK1 » Sun Nov 29, 2009 12:01 pm

I decided that given the shortage of so many calibres of cases I would use some of my surfeit of .30-'06 to make 8x57 Mauser.
Consequently I ordered a cut off die from Graf and Sons this AM.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Got my cut off die the other day.
I actually read the directions (out of character) and set it up in my press.Very straight forward setup no problems.
For cases I decided to start with some ancient GI '06. 1940 FA which I resaoned would offer a safety margin as it's not marked .30-'06 and I don't use it in anything else.
I lubed the cases,ran them in and cut off the protruding excess with a hacksaw followed by a few swipes with a flat bastard file;
when I'd done twenty I did an out side and inside chamfer and then resized.
Voila! 8mm Mauser cases!
I'll load 'em and let you know how the firing goes.

Yup,if they were crimped they have long since been swaged or reamed and
all that's left is to load a moderate charge and see how they work.
We are in the midst of a bit of a blizzard right now so I doubt
that I'll be at the range tomorrow!

Thanks for that good stuff. Keep it coming.
What realy drew my attention was the semi auto pistol on your bench. I was trying to figure what model it was and it brougt back memories of a time when my re loading bench used to look like that with what ever revolver or pistol I was loading for at the time just resting on the bench and how now a days it would get me locked up how times have changed.
