Nimrod blunders on

Postby Niner » Mon Feb 01, 2010 4:19 pm

I ordered a die set for 30 cal carbine the other day. While I was at it I ordered a $29 Lee press so that things would go faster, one die on each press for powder and bullet load. Great idea. Only I should have ordered an extra shell holder for the new die set and all others I have now at the same time. Well....at least I can still use both presses by moving the one shell holder between them and make a few rounds at a time.

Easy to forget isn't it Robert. Mind in gear before pen (or mouse) in motion :loco:

There is now an order in place for a set of shell holders that should cover all the sizes I'll ever want or need.

You are only pulling one handle at a time.
It only takes a second or so to change shell holders, and 30 seconds to change a die.
I really don't see the benefit of having a second press.

Well.... yeah. But, my idea is to use one press to open the case mouth and load the powder and then to move the case to the other press to seat the bullet. Works for me. Seems less trouble than using one press and moving dies and the shell holder around. Not as likely to knock over cases and spill powder before loading bullets... at least for me.

Loaded some .357 today under the new notion and it seemed to work ok.

I would say that the less you have to change/alter the better the end product, plus of course it makes for a happy little loader if that's what you want. I must say I go Roberts way

The Hornady lock n load die bushing system is very effective if you want a quick die change. Its especially good if you only have one press s the dies can be set up in the bushings and don't need to be reset every tinme you need them.

The RCBS will take them but the little Lee "C" press won't.

Worth a look for the future, I use them and like them. Didn't really see the point when they firstcame out to be honest but then I got the bushing kit with my Hornady LnL progessive and was a convert.

If you stick to that routine it would work. I tried something like that, and once I adjusted the sizer say on the RCBS and then went to use it on the Dillon, I had to re-adjust since the press thickness was different. Thus I had to 'remember' what die was used in what press. I found that it was simpler to use spare press for special things like bullet bulling, or primer crimp removal. I wasn't trying to poo your idea, but with every plan is also a possible drawback.

Adjusting the dies once per secession seems normal. I can remember what press used what dies before....but from one use to another I always check the dies to be sure they are set the way I want them.

I use a Lyman crusher single station press all my dies are set up for this press.
If I was to screw the dies in to a Lee press I would have to adjust them. I use one press then I know if I pick a die up I can screw it in and go.
But if the two press system works for you thats fine go for it.
Have you thought of getting a turret press.
