ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
Someone who stayed in our holiday gîte this year asked if i could help him identify a 'bayonet' that his Grandfather left him.
His Grandfather served in the Sussex Regiment, mainly in India ( turn of the century & WWI I think ) but he spent some time in Egypt on the way to India.
Photos attached so if anyone has any ideas lets hear em!

I was just reading an article in Guns & Ammo. It's what the Afghan troops used along with their flintlock Jezail's to defeat Britain in the Second Afghan war. Maiwand 1880 was the big battle.

I was waiting for the Air Force to get on with beating the Navy in a meaningless overtime football game before the network could switch to Auburn and South Carolina.
It's half time and Auburn is 3 points ahead. Alabama and Florida follow tonight shortly after this one ends.

I would suggest a Pathan knife made out of a bayonet.

This link seems to cover it.

About half way down the page there is a picture from the British Library which shows one being worn by a tribesman.

Re: ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
I have had a little experience with the Jezail as in the 60s and 70s of last century (I love to type that, makes me feel really old ). as a lot were imported by a couple of Sydney dealers.
They were very reasonably priced and the dealers didn't realize that some of them had English locks that were worth much more than the gun that they were in. Said guns therefore had an inferior (junk) lock fitted and then off to an auction house where much better prices were realized (i.e. more than the original purchase).
Bit unethical in light of today's values, both monetary and historical, but Jezails were looked upon as mildly interesting at best in those days.
I had a very long barreled, matchlock one that neatly took a patched .50 ball and was deadly on a figure target at 100 yards; all shots could be kept on the chest.
The very smooth matchlock ignition undoubtedly helped.
I must build a matchlock one day, I have a lock that is almost finished (for the last 20 years ).
