Duncan, on the Hawken with the loaded ball with no powder. The traditional way is to use a worm screw on the end of a loading rod, as I'm sure you know. However, what I've done in the past was unscrew the nipple, pour in a few grains of powder in the hole until the powder comes up to the screw threads. You may have the shake the rifle a little to get as much space as possible filled...and it won't be much. Screw the nipple back and put on a cap and fire in a safe direction. The ball comes out with a modest bang. Range is not far and velocity will vary. Now "safety" in doing this is something I don't know the official answer to....but I'm not the first that's done this.

Yes, I did know that thanks Robert.
It isn't a patched ball that is in there but a Lee R.E.A.L. bullet.
We tried removing the nipple and adding powder but to no avail.
One possible problem is that Alain brought the rifle home today to clean it as best he could and it was possible to suck water from the breech end into the barrel past the stuck bullet :( Seems to me that a very small charge might not be enough to move it because the chamber isn't sealed...................

Anyway, he has decided to wait for the tool to arrive from Frankonia in Germany. The gunshop in Bordeaux has bought one for their own workshop as well............

NEWS FLASH - Hawken EMPTY!

To cut a long story short, he brought the Hawken over this afternoon saying that the screw ball puller wouldn't screw into the stuck ball.
He had tried it in another round ball and it worked fine. I tried it in a R.E.A.L. bullet in a vice on my workbench and it worked on that too.

I dropped the cleaning rod with puller attached down the barrel and heard - wait for it - - - - - the sound of Steel on STEEL  not steel on LEAD........

There was no ball in the barrel, proved by loading a powder charge and a couple of felt wads which worked fine, followed by a full bullet load which also worked fine

Whether the 3 caps that he fired at the range actually dislodged the ball or it just melted into thin air I don't know

Anyway, an upshot of all this is to report that I e.mailed Pedersoli on Saturday night with a question about removal of the breech plug and they replied on Sunday evening! Now THATS customer service for you

Good that it evaporated away.

Did Pedersoli 's answer require you to put on a pair of ruby slippers and click your heels?

I sent an E-mail to Chiappa Firearms in Italy yesterday evening.
Had a reply early this morning.
My Le Page was manufactured in April 1993 en exported to "Frankonia Jagd" in Germany that same year.

BTW.....fantastic pictures Duncan.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin
The pictures are not the only fantastic thing, getting a reply from a gun business so quickly is also fantastic.

They must live in the past as epitomized by their guns, as far as service goes.
I don't think they live in the past Aughnanure, just just keep track of their guns.
I agree that this is fantastic service.
I expected a reply, but not that quickly.

There is a handy little device that you guys should have if you're going to mess around with black powder guns. It is a nozzle that takes a CO2 cartridge and has an adapter on it that will fit the nipple hole on the rifle. You remove the nipple, push the rubber tipped adapter into the hole, sqeeze the trigger on the device and a blast of CO2 pushes the ball out the muzzle. Quick, painless and much easier and safer for the weapon than using a ball puller. They sell for about $35 in the States and come with 3 CO2 cartridges.

Duncan,

that's what I get for reading this thread sporadically. The one I've got has the nozzle at 90 degrees to the cylinder and has a trigger. Although, truth be told, with my .577 enfields you can just hold the rifle muzzle down and tap the muzzle gently on something like a wooden block and the bullet will drop out. One of the upsides to shooting Minie balls.

Yesterday I committed the cardinal sin and loaded my Hawken with patch and ball but no powder.
The Co² bullet puller had arrived and so it was a good time to test it...................................Worked perfectly and blew the ball about 10 mtrs out of the barrel
Got to find some more Co² bulbs now because I doubt this will be the last time it will be needed :loco: :loco:
