STARTING THE DECK...............

Image

The base is plywood and I am covering it with pine planks 2,5 cm wide, cut from tongue and groove wall cladding. This will then be varnished.
I have not yet decided on how I will build the ship's side as it needs to be strong enough to withstand the recoil of the gun. :) :)

Duncan,

I suggest a piece of aluminium angle along the base board and disguise it with thin planking both sides then continue above the anchor points with normal planking.

Eoin.

Yes, something like that, lost in a sandwich. The side needs to be at an angle if about 77º so 4 brackets might be better, one at each end and one at each side of the gun port?

Yes, Duncan, that looks a good idea and as there would be less metal you could use steel, and steel nicely coated with epoxy glue won't rust.
I was forgetting about the angle.

I do like the look of your cannon.

Picked up the bits yesterday Eoin. I also cut the angle at the edge of the deck. It is amazing but even after only 10 minutes work my arms are knackered and I have to rest then for a couple of hours. This Op is going to take a long time to recover from me thinks

Now that the deck is finished I have started on the side.
Basic piece is 10mm plywood with a gun port cut to scale (I think). It is secured to the deck at the front by 4 angle brackets bent to 75º to give the rake of the ships side. Secured by screws they will be hidden by the planking that will cover the plywood. I also intend to put a strengthener triangle at each side.

A bit further on now, interior of the hull of the gun deck is now complete. I can only manage about an hour a day at it because of problems with my right arm and a total lack of strength in it. Mind you, taking it slowly = fewer mistakes :loco: :loco:

Looking good. Sorry about the slow recovery with the arm. Take your time. It's not a race you know.
