If the loading tool on the bottom of the revolver presses them in past the opening of the chamber and they are tight....that's the test. Nothing under them in the photo? The loaded ball when over powder will be well under the lip of the face of the chamber.

You want the powder in first. Then the wad. Then the ball. The ball must be pressed down and stay down with no rolling forward at all....pressed solidly, and tightly, against the wad over powder. If you notice the ball not being tight against the load then it's the wrong size. It could be dangerous to fire if it isn't tight. You should be able to take a loaded cylinder and hold it open end down and not notice any movement at all or even with any kind of shake to see if they move. They have to fit tight. The ball doesn't have to cut off a lead circle when loading but it has to fit tight.

Maybe.... if it's not pouring down rain tomorrow, I'll take a trip to the range and make some photos.

Just took a photo ...like yours...of my 1858 New Army with . 451 balls. Looks a lot like what you show. Maybe half the diameter of the ball showing. I know the .451 works in mine just fine. There will be a manufacturer recommendation somewhere. Might be online some place if you look a while. A slightly larger ball may meet the lands and grooves in the barrel better....but maybe or maybe not. Each of these reproductions will vary with who made them as to what works as intended.

I have a Pietta Remington 1858 revolver. I use .451 balls in it and it shaves a ring of lead when seating the ball. I have not used it for a while but now I think I should get it out and shoot it again.
Regards
Peter.

I bought a box of the .451 balls, a box of Pyrodex 30 grain pellets, and a tin of Remington
Magnum caps. The caps were recommended for use with the pellets.
All I need now is a chance to go try it........

Great. I didn't get a chance to go to the range to try my Remington out. Looks like you are ready for Freddy.

Good photos, I had forgotten about them as they were 5 years ago.
I do agree about the grip being on the small side, have read that the Italian replicas
are actually scaled down. Wish they had made them full size.....
Got my capping tool today and will get the nipple wrench tomorrow, hopefully it's
the right size.
