You are very right Duncan.
I do enjoy shooting this rifle.

But......it's not just the shooting, but also testing different loads, bullets, lube and patches just to find the right combination.
What a fantastic hobby we have.

Had some range time today and took my Hawken Woodsman to the range.
Groups are getting smaller compared to a couple of months ago.
Been testing some different loads but my Hawken likes the 26gn of Pyrodex P best.
I did change some other things though.
In stead of the 0.01" pre lubed patches I use 0.015" patches now and lube them with a mixture of Nivea skin creame and Ballistol.
I also found out that I have to apply less pressure on the load.
After applying less pressure the group shifted to the left.
I'm real happy with today's result. :D

Some load data and of course a picture of today's target.

Rifle: Ardesa(Traditions) Hawken Woodsman.
Caliber: .45
Twist: 1:66"
Bullet: 125gn .440" Roundball
Patch: 0.015"
Lube: Nivea/Ballistol mixture
Powder: 26gn Pyrodex P
Distance: 50 meters

Great stuff Martin.

My pal Alain has just ordered a Missouri River Hawken from Pedersoli in .50", delivery direct from the factory in March so will be able to post some comparisons in the spring which should be interesting :D

Thanks Duncan.
I'm very happy with the results.
I like this ML shooting so much that I consider changing to ML pistol and rifle shooting.
As you all know over here we are allowed to have a maximum of 5 weapons on our license (except for the original BP weapons who don't need a license), so I will have to make a choice.
I already own the Hawken Woodsman and if all goes well I will own a ML pistol in a couple of months.
Next to that I'd like to own a flintlock rifle.
Don't know what exact type of rifle yet, but I like the looks of for example the full length stock of the Pedersoli Pennsylvania flintlock rifle in cal .45.

That will be my goal for next year.
Downside is that I will have to sell one of my Mosin Nagants. :(

I checked the Missouri River Hawken rifle on the Pedersoli site.
VERY NICE ! ! ! ! !
I'd like to hear all about it after the first test at the range in March.

You will Martin!!

It is ordered and is costing 819€ / $1070. We are going to start out using the REAL Lee bullets that I cast for my Ardesa .50 and see if they work OK.

Thanks Duncan.
I appreciate that.

I think that when I buy the flint lock rifle next year I will use the round balls instead of any other type of bullet.
For some reason I like to shoot these and accept less accuracy.
