Steyr 1898 in .22 LR

Post by joseyclosey » Mon Sep 29, 2014 2:48 am

Heres an interesting one I came across at the weekend. Originally in 6.5 this Portuguese carbine has been converted to .22LR.
It has King Carlos I crest on the receiver and the charger magazine well has been filled with a nicely fitted wooden block.

It was a bit fussy which ammo it liked and the best grouping was achieved with CCI standard.
Its a type of Mannlicher I haven't come across before and I like it.

It's not my rifle Dave, I was test firing it with various brands of ammo for the owner who was otherwise engaged.
The barrel doesn't appear to be lined looking at the muzzle, but it does appear very flat as though it has been shortened a smidgeon.

Forgot to post a pic of the rear sight, looks like the standard military jobbie to me.
