thanks for the field report on this rifle seems like a hit or miss on quality,
how strange on the australian laws it seems it would be easier to control a local made product than over seeing the imports.

A bit of research (a 'phone call) and a look in Skennerton reveals that the parts for these rifles are probably made in China; that being the only country, apart from India, in the region that has the capacity and the inclination to turn out firearms of quality in short runs. The British Government never sold Australia any machinery for manufacturing No 4 rifles and certainly not pre-WW II when they were in the process of developing the No 4 themselves and didn't manage to have production going well until WW II had started. The rifles in most use by Britain until after the fall of France were the venerable No I Mk III, Mk III* and Mk IV and any other Mks that were lying around.
