Accurate rifles, but in 45Govt. and heavy bullets the recoil is ..............rough. Try the 300-350gr JSP or JHP loads. Or to really have fun a 400-500gr cast with a case full of 2fg!

Well we took it out last weekend with a couple dozen hand loads and we had a blast.
I loaded some with 340 grain cast bullets and IMR4064. result were ok &recoil was non existant
I also tried several 385 gr cast on top of 2400 powder and accuracy was splendid and again recoil was minimal
Next came the 405 grain cast pushed by 2400 and results were as with the 385's
all in all a fun rifle to shoot
I am surprised that the recoil was much lighter than my 264 win mag and even less than my 8mm Yugo 24/47.
just scoped it out with a rather inexpensive Bushnell 3-7x40 scope and will hit the range sometime this week.

45/70 is one of my mostest favorite calibers.I have a Marlin 1895,converted Siamese and an NEF such as big animal has.In the past I have also owned an H&R Buffalo Classic. The NEF is the most fun to shoot and in 45/70 is one of the most accurate NEF's made.
I use two loads. One is a 300 grain jacketed hollow point Remington bullet and the other is a Meister Company cast 300 grain round nose flat point bullet.40 grains of reloader 7 makes an adequate and pleasant load to shoot.
Many people consider this a short range cartridge. Not so.Even the mild loads of mine are good to 200 yards easily.
Enjoy shooting down in low country, big animal.

Stan
you are correct Sir.
the handi rifle is very accurate
we were shooting all day at clay birds set up on the berm 115 yds from the bench and they were easy prey for the 45/70.
I am going to try the reloader 7 as soon as I find some 300 grainers to load
