Shoe/boot polish

Went looking on the net for some 'make it yourself' polish and came up with:

"Homemade shoe paste: If you polish your shoes often, make your own can of shoe paste to replace the store-bought version. Just melt equal parts beeswax, a solid oil (like cocoa butter), and a liquid oil (like olive oil) over a double boiler, and pour it into an empty container. Allow it to harden fully. The paste is ready to use. Just work it into your shoes, wipe off the excess, and you're good to go again. The oil will condition and polish your shoes, while the beeswax will add a coating to protect against water, salt, and any other grime you come into contact with."

https://www.thebalance.com/shoe-polish-recipe-1387820

Made some up and it works but was a little stiff, so used the ingredients that I had left and made some more but with approx half as much again of olive oil, resulted in a softer more spreadable product; which is appropriate as I poured it into butter containers.

When it set I cleaned a couple of pairs of shoes and it works; what's more the stiffer version looks like it would make a good bullet lube with the addition of a bit of graphite.

Cost of ingredients,
Coconut butter [Copha] and an in-house brand of olive oil, $6.40 plus (say) $2.00 for the beeswax (which was a leftover), $8.40

Total amount made 730 grams, cost of a proprietary brand of well known shoe polish $3.40 per 38 grams (and I still have a third of the olive oil left).

So I made up some $65+ worth of polish and it looks OK on wood as well, I just gave my favourite walking stick a good polish.

I'll leave my boots outside the gate for you Eoin but be sure to have them back in the morning all clean and shiny :loco:

The time factor is against me, Duncan, otherwise my pleasure

I had one of my, not unusual, strokes of genius and remembered two half used tins of black polish that'd gone hard, did a remelt of the softer polish and combined the black polish, turned out well by the looks of it, not set yet.

I gave up polishing shoes when I retired. Tennis shoes and sandals require no polish. The only time I wear dress up shoes now is to funerals and weddings.

Back in the '70s I was a pipefitter in a paper mill, always in water and pulp muck.....anyway.
One of the guys I worked with was a real hunter, he would shoot anything that moved.....
When he killed a bear he would reduce the fat to sort of a goop and added some other stuff to it
and we kept it on a heater to stay liquid. Had a small paint brush in it and we would brush it onto
our work boots, really kept them waterproof. And surprisingly it didn't smell bad......

Duncan,

There is possibly Yorkshire blood in me.

My G-G-G Grandfather was a prosperous Scottish farmer and he married the fifth daughter of an impoverished, and no doubt desperate, Scots nobleman and thanks to that union I can trace my line through the Arbuthnots/Gordons/Stewarts/Beauforts to John of Gaunt and Edward III, so there's some connection, tenuous but there none the less.

Probably where I get my good look from.

Well they say that a Yorkshireman is a Scotsman with all the generosity kicked out of him
My mother was a serious genealogist and has proved links to Scottish ancestors who came down with the Prince Charles's army but stayed in Yorkshire. Original surname Andrew but as far as I am concerned I am a Yorkshireman first, an Englishman second but NEVER a European :ENG: :ENG:

Duncan,

Genealogy is great fun and I can trace myself back to many historical figures including Robert the Bruce, William the Conqueror and Brian Boru, the lustre dims a bit when one reads more about the 'illustrious', I also have Dermot Mc Morrough, known in Irish history as "The First Traitor" (can't win 'em all :( ).

It has been truly said that Family Trees are like Peanut bushes, the best parts are under the ground.

My late sister was really into that, she traced the family back in Europe for hundreds of years.
Also found some that fought in Revolutionary War and both sides of Civil War. Even found one
in the old west that was hung as a horse thief...... maybe I'm named after him.....
