Duncan,
I found that instead of woodglue, which does the job from a technical aspect but can cause cosmetic problems, I get good results from West System 2-part epoxy colored with powdered tempra paint. Mix brown paint powder into the part A before adding the hardener. A little at a time until you get the color you want, add hardener and assemble.
While it's pricey the shelf life seems to be very long. I've had a quart for over 5 year and is about half gone, still works fine. It is also fuel resistant/proof so I use it to coat the bottom of the fuel tanks in my other hobby, pump pressure lanterns and stoves.

Managed to clear about 90% of it but there is a small bit that won't shift, will have to sneak up on it attack it when it's not looking!"

Well, all done for the time being. I am going to leave the new piece for a while to see if it 'wears in' a bit.
I have drilled out the channel for the cleaning rod which fits perfectly.
It just remains for me to re assemble her and get her to the range - once I have sorted out my new club......

A neat enough job that doesn't look out of place. Well done.
