1917 SSA Peddled Scheme

Post by sakorick » Thu Sep 06, 2012 11:08 pm

I think I have a new favorite. The Standard Small Arms (SSA) has matching numbers on the bolt, nose cap and stock and has the original SN on the buttstock. I believe this rifle was issued to the 3d Military District in Victoria when new or near new. As far as I can tell, it's all original with no import marks. The Bore is bright and shows a little wear and the wood is all solid with very few dings and no chips or cracks. The forestock looks to have been replaced with Coachwood. This piece was well cared for and came with a sling(repo) and oiler.

I stumbled onto this gem while surfing and could hardly believe the price of $300 and is in fact a real Peddled Scheme. It was sent to Australia in payback for the rifles Aus sent to GB at the outbreak of WWI. I am the luckiest gun kook in the world! Regards, Rick.

Well done for finding this one. The oil bottle is a MkIV from J & J Bent made in 1913.

Thanks for the info on the oiler. I found a SSA marked triggerguard for it too. A fellow from Australia had it and we are trading triggerguards.....I am also throwing in a very nice Savage magazine and still think I'm getting a great SSA marked part. Nice find, the old girl is in good nick.
By the way, 3rd Military District is Victoria. Queensland was the 1st Military District.

New South Wales whilst being the 2nd Military District considered itself the First.

I got lucky and found a SSA triggerguard. The fellow from Aus (NSW) and I swapped some parts. Now she has another SSA part which are hard to come by. Regards, Rick.
