Major German offensive continues. They have reached the Marne river. The allies work on holding the advance. In another month the "second battle of the Marne" will show the Allies pushing the Germans back and the beginning of the end.

The newspapers were starting to give up "Sammies" for "Yanks" rather quickly. However, their ace reporters were still of the 19th Century school of reporting. Nobody writing in the 20th Century would continue to write about "the flower of our troops" very much longer. That Sir Walter Scott way of writing would have to end.

Marine Corps press is very good. They are crack shots and only the best shots get to the front line. And they all want to get to the front line.

I tried to make this reporters numbers balance out in some way shape or form but have not been successful. Obviously the guy is an expert in the ways of combat though, even though his arithmetic seems faulty, otherwise he wouldn't know that Marines always calmly pick out their targets rather than just firing into the mass of Germans coming toward them owing to their fine instruction on the rifle range?

A hundred years ago today the Germans continued their offensive and the allies continued to hold the line. The only problem is that the line doesn't ever seem to move much. The great German break out to Paris doesn't happen...in this war part one.

On the same page of a New York newspaper we get a story about American Irish troops and a photo about "colored" troops. The one about training Irish Americans in Ireland had to have been bogus on the face of it but showed the sub set that Irish background Americans were assumed to be in. But America at the time saw itself as white and Protestant and fantasized that all their preceding ancestors came over on the Mayflower. Anyone who couldn't put up that front was suspect of being some lesser species of American. Of course the general run of Americans had to have known the truth beneath the fantasy if they could bring themselves to think at all about their attitudes. And it went without saying that any Americans with German roots were now suspect of being the enemy...that they all had faith in, including the "colored" and the "Irish".

Uncle Sam plans to take good care of the soldiers returning with war caused physical problems. What else could a soldier want?

Well about the time of the Depression the veterans wanted to be compensated for the wages they would have made while being paid soldiers pay. And Congress said ok......in 1945. So they marched on Washington and and set up in Hoover villes and made demands for money now. Didn't do them much good. However, when this cartoon was made that wasn't a problem that anybody could foresee. http://www.upworthy.com/wwi-vets-got-th ... eir-answer

William Jennings Bryan, the famous former Secretary of State and later champion the Bible and Adam and Eve at the Scopes Trial, takes a swing at demon booze. In a story along side this one the Army and Navy were having trouble getting meat fit to eat. Bryan apparently didn't have a problem with demon ham....or at least hadn't stepped forward with his biblical opinion yet.

Even when relatively small amounts of realestate are exchanged back and forth the weekly casualty rates are appallingly high. Here is what just the British admit to for one week.

Times are getting tough in the US. Sugar is being rationed. Only three pounds per person per month! Wonder how much they used before the rationing. But at lease explosives and ant poison wouldn't be affected.

This war isn't cheap. No wonder they were beating the drum for war bonds. The national debt had to have been growing enormously.

Britain and France were borrowing from the US. What did they care?

At the beginning of the 20th century the national debt stood at around 30 percent of GDP.[5] However, during World War I the British Government was forced to borrow heavily in order to finance the war effort. The national debt increased from £650m in 1914 to £7.4 billion in 1919.[7]

Britain borrowed heavily from the US during World War I, and many loans from this period remain in a curious state of limbo. In 1931, President Herbert Hoover announced a one-year moratorium on war loan repayments from all nations, due to the global economic crisis, but by 1934 Britain still owed the US $4.4bn of World War I debt (about £866m at 1934 exchange rates). Adjusted for inflation, that would amount to around £40bn today, and if adjusted by the growth of British GDP, to about £225 billion. During the Great Depression Britain ceased payments on these loans, but outstanding bonds such as the War Loan were finally paid off in 2015.[8][9]

It takes two to tango..........Someone has to lend to allow someone to borrow and they don't do it for love no matter what anyone said.
As is noted at the bottom of that piece, outstanding bonds such as the War Loan were finally paid off in 2015.

Americans never met a war that they didn't want to finance or participate in, or both. WWII, while Britain was still paying off WWI required more borrowing:

During World War II the Government was again forced to borrow heavily in order to finance war with the Axis powers. By the end of the conflict Britain's debt exceeded 200 percent of GDP, as it had done after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.[5] As during World War I, the US again provided the major source of funds, this time via low-interest loans and also through the Lend Lease Act. Even at the end of the war Britain needed American financial assistance, and in 1945 Britain took a loan for $586 million (about £145 million at 1945 exchange rates), and in addition a further $3.7 billion line of credit (about £930m at 1945 exchange rates). The debt was to be paid off in 50 annual repayments commencing in 1950. Some of these loans were only paid off in the early 21st century. On 31 December 2006, Britain made a final payment of about $83m (£45.5m) and thereby discharged the last of its war loans from the US.

By the end of World War II Britain had amassed an immense debt of £21 billion. Much of this was held in foreign hands, with around £3.4 billion being owed overseas (mainly to creditors in the United States), a sum which represented around one third of annual GDP.[10]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_o ... ional_debt

The question in my mind is..... how did the Germans finance WWI or later WWII? Maybe an enormous inflation in German currency had something to do with nullifying the German war debt? Maybe the territory it captured provided wealth convertible into war material?
