US newspapers July 24th, 1914. . It isn't a gigantic headline. It doesn't deserve as much space as a congressman's wife taking photos of Washington big dogs. But...when you read it it is sensational. But... considering the newspaper space nobody seemed to think much of it.....not like now days and the TV news organization that did round the clock coverage of the airplane that went missing in South East Asia recently.

But the US....at this point...didn't care all that much. This was a European problem. In those days we didn't realize we were required to play a part in every thing that happens in the world....particularly if there was going to be any shooting.

The New York Tribune June 25, 1914

No globe flying Secretary of State then. No Hillary to make "hard choices". No United Nations to make prepared statements. William Jennings Bryan, the US Secretary of State was traveling around though. He was making a speech to supplement his government income which he found too low to live on.

Meanwhile.... back at the ranch. Our secretary of state was off on the rubber chicken circuit. And....the press didn't take too kindly to it.
