An American tv show in the late'60s, called "The Rat Patrol" was mostly based on this group
and Popski's Private Army. I don't think the US had a group like this in the desert.

That programme was based on Jack & Jill Vern, pure Hollywood escapism and nothing else.

Duncan,

The guns on the jeeps are Vickers 'K' machine guns that were redundant for air use but were ideal for what Stirling had in mind.
There is a story that a particular Air Marshal was not amused when it was jestingly suggested to him that Stirling should be given a high Air Force decoration because he was responsible for destroying more enemy planes in the desert campaign than anyone in the RAF.
Self Defence is not only a Right, it is an Obligation.

Eoin.

Well duh! Of course it was. Closer to McHale's Navy and Hogan's Heroes, just more action than comedy.
No one ever believed it was true stories for all 58 episodes, any more than it was believed that
Black Sheep Squadron was all true. They were all pure entertainment, VERY LOOSLEY based on some real
people and situations, not historical documentaries.
I guess everyone but you already knew that, but you told us anyway. Thank you Captain Obvious...
