WWII ....for the US... started 75 years ago today with the bombing of Pearl Harbor...as everybody with a tv set in the US is reminded of if they turn it on. A friend of mine told me today that Donald Burgett has now landed in the old folks home with his mind failing and his body beyond the ability to move around even with a walker. Burgett wrote some of the best memoirs of WWII. Eisenhower even wrote a remark for the cover of one of them. He was in the 101st and jumped into Normandy on D Day and lasted, collecting a few wounds along the way, until the end of the war and came out no more than a buck sergeant for his effort He wasn't anywhere near Hawaii on Pearl Harbor day. if there hadn't have been a Pearl Harbor there would have been something else to kick the thing off for us and he would have still been the hero that he was...probably.

WWII started today, Dec 8th, when Congress voted to declare war on Japan.

"On December 8, 1941, the United States Congress declared war (Public Law 77-328, 55 STAT 795) on the
Empire of Japan in response to that country's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor the prior day."
