Re: PHOTOGRAPHS ...........
An Admiralty Fleet Order went out on 22 October 1936 restricting the issue of cutlasses, which had until that point been standard equipment for landing parties of sailors.
Use of cutlasses at ceremonial events, parades and funerals was not affected.....

Re: PHOTOGRAPHS ...........
Reference cutlasses,
a school mate of mine showed me some of his father's war souvenirs which included the flag from a German ship which HMAS "Shropshire" grappled and boarded during WWII.
His father had been a Petty Officer and led the boarding party which was armed with cutlasses and pistols; his father, some years later, showed me a pair of Lugers that also came off the captured ship (wonder where they are now?).
He told me that when he and his men came screaming over the side waving their blades the clatter of small arms hitting the deck was drowned by the cries of "Kommarad".
There were, it seems, no casualties on either side and it was probably the last time that Australian sailors used cutlasses in warfare.

Re: PHOTOGRAPHS ...........
Niner,
Great pic; reminds m of the time that I stepped into a mud filled old slit trench.
I wrapped my arms around a rifle and two mates pulled me out, fortunately, it was only mud; our forward scout once stepped into a Korean farm "Honey pot" pit and alternated as forward scout/rear guard whenever the wind changed!!

I wonder what is powering one or both of these barges, I see no tow ropes or engine exhaust??
