Anyone have any stories that could come under this heading?

I've got one that is unique, for me at any rate.

It was the first Battalion Parade for our intake of recruits at 1RTB (Recruit Trg Bn) at Kapooka, NSW, in the early 1950s.

The CO, Col. Dowdy was inspecting the parade. Every now and then he would stop and talk to a recruit, we had a lot of WW2 blokes who had joined up again and it was these that he was having a word with.

He was three ranks in front of the one that I was in when he stoped in front of a tall recruit, turned to face him and saluted the private.

There was a short conversation then the digger stepped out of the ranks and accompanied the Colonel on the rest of the inspection. When they got to me I was rigid at attention (early days :!: ) and didn't look at the private.

Who he was we never found out and he disappeared . Obviously he had a high decoration or some such and his recruit training was over.

I've often wondered.

Eoin.
