Bit late oneshooter :)

The Corps of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, commonly just referred to as the Royal Marines (RM), are the marine corps and amphibious infantry of the United Kingdom and, along with the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary, form the Naval Service. They are also the United Kingdom's specialists in amphibious warfare, including the operation of landing craft; mountain warfare; and Arctic warfare. A core component of the country's Rapid Deployment Force, the Corps's 3 Commando Brigade is capable of operating independently and is highly trained as a commando force. It is trained to deploy quickly and fight in any terrain. The Royal Marines have one of the longest basic infantry training courses in the World.

Active from 28 October 1664

This means that they pre-date The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) or American War of Independence by at least 20 years and taking their inception date - 111 years

The Royal Marines were formed as part of the Naval Service in 1755. However, it can trace its origins back as far as 1664, when English soldiers first went to sea to fight the Spanish and prevent them from reaching the fortress of Gibraltar. The Corps underwent a notable change after 1945 however, when the Royal Marines took on the main responsibility for the role and training of the British Commandos. The Royal Marines have an illustrious history, and since their creation in 1942 Royal Marines Commandos have engaged on active operations across the globe, every year, except 1968 Notably they were the first ever military unit to perform an air assault insertion by helicopter, during the Suez Crisis in 1956.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNITED STATES MARINE CORP

Vern does not lurk, he jumps in and shoots his mouth off and usually gets into trouble for it.

And besides, the subject line is "Happy Birthday US MARINE CORP".

The Royal Marines are never mentioned, so I'm not sure why Duncan needed to post the biography of The Corpses of Her Majesty's Royal Maries.
And maybe if they enlisted smarter men, they wouldn't have to have such a long basic training course.

So you must be right Duncan, England has the worlds toughest Marines.

I have to stop now or Robert will make me sit in the corner......................again.

P.S. My spellcheck may be broken, not sure.

It's not that they aren't smart enough that makes their training so long, Vern. It's the walking on water course. Lots of guys actually wash out after their six month chance to get it right.

I know........... My turn to sit in the corner.

It seems that Duncan has spent enough time in France that he is no longer an Englishman. Therefore he can be excused for being a prick.

I take particular exception to that and would be grateful if you would withdraw the specific remark forthwith. Although I am able to I do not intend to remove it myself.

For the record..............I was born a Yorkshireman and will always remain so.
Yorkshire is the Largest County in England and so I am also, by default an Englishman.
I live in France and altholugh I have no wish to become a Frenchman I have many friends here. I also know a considerable amount about the nation and it's suffering ,
PARTICULARLY in the two World Wars and I have nothing but admiration for the nation on the whole.

Also, for the record, I will be at the British Military Cemetary in Bordeaux on Sunday at 10:30 to honour the dead of both Wars, Americans included!

How nice of you to include honoring the Americans, too.
Shall we go down this road again..................
Last time you complained that (1.) we showed up late for both wars and (2.) then bled you dry for repayment.
1. We waited to see if you could win, before we had to come die for you.
2. This is what happens when you have to get the big kid on the block to save your ass from the bullies.

History lesson over.
