Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
Meanwhile... the Germans are raising hell in the Spring offensive and the British are also having trouble with the Irish who won't love them as their protecting mother country. And back home a politician is telling about a wondrous new device that was all claim and no truth ..if anything like it existed at all....although it would probably been better used to time baseball pitches or catch motorists speeding if it was like the radar gun of later decades.

Maybe this is what they were talking about???..............

Peace is that brief, quiet moment in history.......... when everybody stands around reloading.

The slaughter was terrific. Only nobody seemed to be terrified at the carnage. All fine when it was the Germans slaughtered but tomorrow the screw will turn and the headlines will not tell that story.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
If you read the actual words of Haig's Order it becomes obvious that he had identified the solution to the German's Spring Offensive and was fully aware of the consequences of failure......

Allies are backing up under all out attacks by the Germans. Americans are starting to get into more heavy fighting near the main brunt of attack and no longer part of a side show.

So which side is winning today? Depends on what newspaper you read.
Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
Atrocity stories were front page news a hundred years ago. Reading this one reminded me of the movie Platoon, which was fiction, or the actual horrific My Lai Massacre in the Vietnam war about a half century later. However, unlike many such WWI stories that were likely more propaganda rumor than truth, this one rings true because of the location. It was the scene of Russians massacring Jews in 1700's and the murder of Jews by the Nazi's in the second world war. Doubt seriously anybody checked religion in such an attack on civilians in 1918, but makes one wonder.
This particular town had been the HQ of the Imperial Russian Army for a while preceding this atrocity and the Czar had visited there while he was commander of the Russian forces.

Just another day of bashing the hell out of each other on the battle field. But....Wilson bows to the French and supports the French general for commander in chief of the allies.

A photo op that turned out badly...and painful.... for President Wilson. This was on the lawn of the White House. Tanks and photo ops would remain disastrous down through the years for politicians ...... remember Mike Dukakis?
And this was a British tank...not even American.
