Memorial Day today. A hundred years ago in the papers.
Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
Major German offensive continues. They have reached the Marne river. The allies work on holding the advance. In another month the "second battle of the Marne" will show the Allies pushing the Germans back and the beginning of the end.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
The newspapers were starting to give up "Sammies" for "Yanks" rather quickly. However, their ace reporters were still of the 19th Century school of reporting. Nobody writing in the 20th Century would continue to write about "the flower of our troops" very much longer. That Sir Walter Scott way of writing would have to end.

How about this "Holy Hole in a Doughnut!" And from a "semi official source" too!

The great commander is now found. Foch is the man. And this time it actually will continue to play out that way.

Marine Corps press is very good. They are crack shots and only the best shots get to the front line. And they all want to get to the front line.
I tried to make this reporters numbers balance out in some way shape or form but have not been successful. Obviously the guy is an expert in the ways of combat though, even though his arithmetic seems faulty, otherwise he wouldn't know that Marines always calmly pick out their targets rather than just firing into the mass of Germans coming toward them owing to their fine instruction on the rifle range?
