While I'm on the food topic. The US Army recent requirement is pretty heavy on bacon. Wonder what's in the can goods?

Now if it were the British Army we could understand..... bacon butties.

Winning is fun...back home. The cartoons reflect the lofty view of carnage that someone not participating can gloat over as victory. If the offensive had gone the other way they would be fabricating some silver lining. Bill Mauldin won a Pulitzer for a cartoon in WWII ....he had actually been there.

The German offensive has been stopped and now the attack goes the other way and the Germans are running out of fresh troops to blunt it. They are being trapped in a giant pocket and have few reserves to counter the million Americans who have been infused into the allied counter offensive.

New York did support its local heroes. Here is an advertisement for a Sunday feature coming the next Sunday. No wonder there was a movie made of "The Fighting 69th". It's a wonder it took until 1940.

On the front page about the cavalry, there is an article about, "Destroyer ready for service in 70 days". The name of
the destroyer is USS Ward DD-139, the same ship that fired the first shots of WWII outside Pearl Harbor on the
morning of Dec 7th, 1941. It shot at and sunk a Jap 2-man mini-sub as it tried to sneak into Pearl Harbor a few hours
before the air attack. And sadly, the Ward was sunk exactly 3 years later on Dec 7th, 1944, by a kamikaze, while
it was on patrol during the Leyte invasion.

The war continues with Germany continuing to to resist the allied attacks with as many men as they can muster. Some small towns change hands back and forth each day.

Meanwhile...back in the USA. Seems that the US had worked out a deal with the British to draft British citizens of military age in the US for the US forces. But there is an announcement on this date in the newspaper that wants the draft potential of former citizens in the army of their homeland with a short time offer from Britain and Canada.

Americans are in the thick of the fighting. A blood bath of glory no doubt with the Americans on the side that has gained the most yardage. And judging by the train load of artillery as spoils of war it must have been one hell of a battle. However.... the last few lines about shooting up the German artillery shells by rank of enlisted men in turn must come out of Ripley's Believe it or Not. And I come down on the side of not.

Looks like Mr Carroll is possibly exaggerating as regards the number of Machine Guns captured - thousands?

The story of Nicholas II being executed in Russia is starting to make the newspapers. The Pensacola paper gives it a theatrical cast like a James Cagney movie of the tough guy who goes yellow walking the last mile to the electric chair. What really happened was more like the St. Valentine day massacre and included the whole family of the Czar who were brutally murdered.
