Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
Everybody has heard of Sgt. Alvin York. You know the conscientious objector from Appalachia who God converted to a killer for his country...as played by Gary Cooper in the movie. Sgt. York actually existed and did win the CMOH. But this guy Sgt. J. F. Brown didn't get a movie. Instead he got a commercial for liberty bonds. Funny thing is....he didn't win a Congressional Medal of Honor either. He didn't win a DSC even. Could he have been created by a newspaper writer with a great imagination? Total BS propaganda?
There is one online "history" that tells slightly less single handed version of the advertisement. It quotes the news corespondents tale.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
FYI.... it isn't actually the "Congressional" MOH, the name is Medal of Honor.
The confusion may be because the president presents the award “in the name of Congress.”
Although there are even websites that call it that, and many think that it is actually the name of the medal.

Peace is that brief, quiet moment in history.......... when everybody stands around reloading.

I stand corrected. The President does present it on behalf of Congress though ...and people call it the "Congressional" Medal of Honor just the same.
Incidentally, speaking of the MOH, Vern, a guy named Sammy L. Davis won the MOH with Charlie battery of the 2nd of the 4th artillery, 9th Division in Vietnam in November of 1967. In the movie Forest Gump there is brief news footage of him getting the metal with Tom Hanks head superimposed over his body. Sammy posts at the 2nd of the 4th facebook page now and again. He earned the medal when a firebase was over run. He wasn't even with the infantry. He never had to leave the battery to do something heroic.

General Pershing addressed 6000 black troops who were stevedores. Somehow I don't think, if he could be transported in time to today, that he could address a large black audience and brag that he had been raised by a "colored mammy" and get much applause.
