THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

Post by DuncaninFrance » Sat Sep 01, 2012 3:27 am

With the 100th anniversary of the start of the 'War To End All Wars' moving ever nearer I thought it would be appropriate for a dedicated thread on MAH to post links and other items concerning the First World War.

As a starter I thought that this link would be an interesting one to view. It is from the CWGC September Newsletter which can be viewed at;

http://newsletters.wizontheweb.co.uk/t/ ... 16412CAE5B

As part of that Newsletter the following link takes you to the Commonwealth Cemeteries Of The World site.

Here is a Google Earth map showing an overlay of the CWGC Cemeteries and memorials in France.

If it was "The War to End all Wars", why did they give it a number?

(And yes, we all know the answer, it's just a little war humor.)

CANADIAN FORESTRY CORPS.,

Post by DuncaninFrance » Mon Sep 03, 2012 10:57 am

Not everyone who joined up or was conscripted actually fought in the front line during WWI.
For example, George Gilbert Bricker of Waterloo, Ontario, H.Q., Canadian Forestry Corps who died on 27 October 1918.
He is buried in TALENCE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Bordeaux, possibly a casualty of the Flu Pandemic that claimed so many lives at the end of the war.
The Royal British legion hold a service here every Remembrance Sunday and a Poppy Cross is placed on the graves of all the 11 burials .
More information about the Corps can be found here.

Since he died just a couple weeks before the end maybe he was one of those who volunteered for the infantry.

I was wondering what the Forestry Corps was doing in a war and found this:

That's the second link I posted above Robert!
I doubt he was in any battle or front line as he is buried here in Bordeaux. More likely he was working in the Lands where they grow large acreages of timber.
It's possible a tree fell 0n him or some such mishap I suppose but the flue pandemic gets my vote as there are 9 Canadian graves, all Forestry Corps and all died between October 1917 & September 1918.
None of the records state K.I.A.

My cousin's Grandfather was in the trenches with the Canadian infantry. When I was a boy he told me stories about the trenches, wish I had a better memory or had written them down. He did get hit with gas, but he didn't seem to have a any permanent damage, guess his gas mask must have worked.
I will be seeing that cousin when I go to Washington this week, will ask her if she remembers any of the stories.

My Grandfather was in the Royal Navy and made it through WWI and served 22 years in all , Then went to work at RSAF Enfield .
I have his world tour a photo albums and many photos of things that happened during WWI .
Heres a photo of his jumper , white cap cover , medals , cap ribbons and German ribbons from captured sailors , The Mary box and items from it , the gun turret I believe he made whilst on board ship , the small brass shield was attached to peice of decking apparently .
