Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
This I found interesting...considering the extreme hell Hitler would later put Jews through in the World War round two. A particular newspaper article makes a statement that Jews were already in a hell of a way in Germany. Negroes in America were second class citizens, admittedly, but I wasn't aware of the Jews being systematically made so subservient previous to Hitler. However.... in another newspaper, on the other coast, the same day, was a story about how the daughter of one of the famous Jews that the first story held up as an example of accomplishment, despite extreme prejudice against, is noted as being engaged to one of Germany's chief diplomats. Doesn't help the horrific shaming of Germany in the first story and suggests to me that the larger story was likely heavily weighted and intended as propaganda for whatever reason.
I've found elsewhere that truly Jews had a hard life in much of Europe, including Germany and particularly Russia which had been a major participant on the side of the Entente. Jews were often the victims of violence and pogroms and unfair laws based only on their ethnicity. At the same time it seems that at least 100,000 Jews served in the German cause willingly as citizens. Another large number served in the Russian Army as well.

J. D. Rockefeller, the richest man in America and reportedly knocking down 60 million a year is doing his part on the home front. A committee from his church, including the household Rockefeller's are meeting in his dining room for an afternoon each week...or did so at least once... to sew and make bandages for the war effort. Amazing patriot old J.D. and family are..... and they have a good press agent.
You would think a fellow taking home more than a million a week could just buy some bandages and send them off to the war. Maybe get some Mexicans in the country illegally to whip him up a train load for say a 30 minute chunk of donated wages. He would hardly miss it at all.

In WWI there were no PTSD cases. There were two classes of battle induced mental conditions that were recognized. First was Shell Shock. Shell Shock just meant you were nervous in the service from being shot at and would probably recover and go back into action. If you were thought to be a step beyond shell shock then you were insane and that was a different treatment...including... being sent to America for further treatment of some sort.

Earning a medal the clever way. Old Doug, a STAFF OFFICER, and chief of staff at that, got himself a medal by taking a field trip with the French to learn now the French go from their trench to the German's trench and back again. The photo quote in the Washington paper is a bit misleading as to how he won the medal and suggests that he was leading and not just along as an observer, but the newspaper's story straightens it out somewhat.
Reminds me of how I got my photo in the last slick publication of the 9th Division in Vietnam...but that's another story...and no medal was involved and required no courage at all.

Seems like as a staff officer he was in charge of censorship at the time. So... what was he doing if he wasn't fishing for a medal.

When trench warfare proves to be a meat grinder the Germans reconfigure their trench system into the new and improved meat grinder. Basically.... add more layers of wire and trenches and strong points.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
The generals are still the heroes. The newspapers are more responsible for it than the generals themselves...mostly so it would appear. An up and coming officer, "Dugout Doug" of later WWII and Korea fame, used the press to advantage from time to time all through his career down to his farewell "Old soldiers never die" speech.

Of course the interesting thing about modern history is that it was so well documented that we can now look back on the reports of the day and sift the truth from the propagand

Here is a story from a Negro Newspaper at the time. Guess the Army had to make some notes for future physical examinations for recruits.... or start stocking larger shoe sizes.

It's heating up on the old battle front. Spring is here and it's time for both sides to whale the hell out of each other with new enthusiasm after a long and not altogether uneventful winter.
