The American Army is going into quick growing mode and the new officers are confronted with a clothing problem. Supply and demand has them in a bind.

Well, if they were in the Army what else would they spend their first month's pay on? They should be training!!

Meanwhile in the land of the brave and the home of the free, stuff was happening that wasn't even slightly tolerant to those who were not politically correct. The I. W. W., a Socialist, Marxist, Anarchist, anti war union of crusaders against non union business were giving some mine operators a hard time in Arizona and found out they didn't need to buy a ticket to leave town. And...nobody but the train engineers seemed to know where the Wobblies would get out of the cattle cars or what kind of shape they would be in when that happened.

Bisbee was known for copper mines, in fact you can still take a ride on a very small train for
over a quarter mile into a mine. It was fun and have been to Bisbee many times. And the town is
mostly tourist things now, lots of those little artsy-crafty stores that your wife drags you into.......

In WWII the American soldier was called "GI" which stood for Government Issue. In WWI we often hear of the Dough-boy. However, the slang term that the public was given, and promoted, for this stage of the war for the American soldier was "Sammie". One source of the origin was General Pershing creating it as a possible American equal to the Tommy for the Brits or Fritz for the Germans or Poilu for the French.
