How about this as an inspiring speech? Those old monarchs know how to inspire the troops didn't they?

The tale of the crepe. Women expressed themselves. There is the white tape for ...ain't we glad you're dead you hero you. And there is the black crepe for ...ain't it a crying shame they are killing each other. And all on the same front page a hundred years ago.

Rudyard Kipling ..famous British poet and writer got on board the British war propaganda band wagon. Here is an early poetic effort.

September 4, 1914. New war methods include a phone that has one speaker that the soldier talked into and then listened for a response. The paper says this a new war invention that did away with the need for message couriers and made war more deadly. The other photos show Belgians in a street standing behind cement bags and French soldiers in a street ambush position.

The other is an article about British losses to date. Seems like ... only... 10,399 casualties in killed, wounded, and missing so far. If only they knew how those figures would spiral dramatically higher in the years ahead.

Wilson figured he needed a War Tax. And at that time we weren't at war. The reason was that with the war in Europe the taxes usually made from foreign commerce had gone to nearly nothing and tax revenue needed to be raised. So... a hundred years ago this was the notion of the day as to how to do it. Notice the sin tax structure and the rather light touch on the income tax. But.... if you only made a few thousand dollars a year..those were really needed dollars I'd imagine....each one of them.

Late breaking news. Wilson wants some money...but thinks Income tax would not be the way to do it. Back to the sin tax.
