Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
In New York "slackers" and draft dodgers were hunted down on the streets of New York City. Scary stuff. No proper draft card and the miscreant was hauled off as a prisoner of the state. At the big hotels the guests weren't bothered but the kitchen crew and bell hops and other less reputable hired help were all investigated. I guess the US really wasn't the land of the free and the home of the brave after all now that it was war crazy.

Germany is getting it's ass kicked thanks to a large infusion of American bodies to the blood bath. Germany can't man up and shit a million and a half new troops to face the additional Americans in a nation that has been bleeding it's youth for years. It's looking bad.....but ... Germany can still protect the homeland. So they think.

No driving around joy riding on Sunday in New York. Save that fuel to support the war effort. If the cops see you they will copy your license and same you as a low down rotten slacker.

America loves to sacrifice ...particularly when it comes to sin. Beer is sin of course. America has that old Pilgrim spirit....even when it puts a shuts down taxes collected for the war they seem to be sacrificing for.

How unpatriotic can you get? A baseball Worlds Series pay players strike. Now days players make something like a third of a million each for playing in a World Series beyond their already fat contract pay checks.

The Bernie Sanders of his day, Eugene V. Debs was a Socialist activist who was against the war and the draft. That got him arrested, tried and sentenced to ten years in prison. His sentence was commuted after three years in prison.
"Disloyal utterances". Wonder what the people of that time would think of Steven Colbert and the other late night talk show hosts?

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news
Here's a second post today since this struck me as reflective of modern news.
One New York paper had an editor that went off his nut and killed his wife and left a note that he was going to kill himself. It was on the front page of a rival New York newspaper. However the editor story didn't make the editors New York paper. In it's place was a story that involved the "N word" that would never make a paper today for several reasons.

The Evening World lost it's editor and printed the N word story. And the New York Sun told about the editor without printing the N word story at all.
