This I found interesting...considering the extreme hell Hitler would later put Jews through in the World War round two. A particular newspaper article makes a statement that Jews were already in a hell of a way in Germany. Negroes in America were second class citizens, admittedly, but I wasn't aware of the Jews being systematically made so subservient previous to Hitler. However.... in another newspaper, on the other coast, the same day, was a story about how the daughter of one of the famous Jews that the first story held up as an example of accomplishment, despite extreme prejudice against, is noted as being engaged to one of Germany's chief diplomats. Doesn't help the horrific shaming of Germany in the first story and suggests to me that the larger story was likely heavily weighted and intended as propaganda for whatever reason.

I've found elsewhere that truly Jews had a hard life in much of Europe, including Germany and particularly Russia which had been a major participant on the side of the Entente. Jews were often the victims of violence and pogroms and unfair laws based only on their ethnicity. At the same time it seems that at least 100,000 Jews served in the German cause willingly as citizens. Another large number served in the Russian Army as well.

J. D. Rockefeller, the richest man in America and reportedly knocking down 60 million a year is doing his part on the home front. A committee from his church, including the household Rockefeller's are meeting in his dining room for an afternoon each week...or did so at least once... to sew and make bandages for the war effort. Amazing patriot old J.D. and family are..... and they have a good press agent.

You would think a fellow taking home more than a million a week could just buy some bandages and send them off to the war. Maybe get some Mexicans in the country illegally to whip him up a train load for say a 30 minute chunk of donated wages. He would hardly miss it at all.

In WWI there were no PTSD cases. There were two classes of battle induced mental conditions that were recognized. First was Shell Shock. Shell Shock just meant you were nervous in the service from being shot at and would probably recover and go back into action. If you were thought to be a step beyond shell shock then you were insane and that was a different treatment...including... being sent to America for further treatment of some sort.

Earning a medal the clever way. Old Doug, a STAFF OFFICER, and chief of staff at that, got himself a medal by taking a field trip with the French to learn now the French go from their trench to the German's trench and back again. The photo quote in the Washington paper is a bit misleading as to how he won the medal and suggests that he was leading and not just along as an observer, but the newspaper's story straightens it out somewhat.

Reminds me of how I got my photo in the last slick publication of the 9th Division in Vietnam...but that's another story...and no medal was involved and required no courage at all.

https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... d-1/seq-1/

Seems like as a staff officer he was in charge of censorship at the time. So... what was he doing if he wasn't fishing for a medal.

When trench warfare proves to be a meat grinder the Germans reconfigure their trench system into the new and improved meat grinder. Basically.... add more layers of wire and trenches and strong points.

The generals are still the heroes. The newspapers are more responsible for it than the generals themselves...mostly so it would appear. An up and coming officer, "Dugout Doug" of later WWII and Korea fame, used the press to advantage from time to time all through his career down to his farewell "Old soldiers never die" speech.

Of course the interesting thing about modern history is that it was so well documented that we can now look back on the reports of the day and sift the truth from the propagand

Here is a story from a Negro Newspaper at the time. Guess the Army had to make some notes for future physical examinations for recruits.... or start stocking larger shoe sizes.

It's heating up on the old battle front. Spring is here and it's time for both sides to whale the hell out of each other with new enthusiasm after a long and not altogether uneventful winter.

A month before this advertising ploy, the manager of the Coca Cola Company in Atlanta was in court over a woman who was trying to set him up for blackmail over a alleged sexual adventure. But... he came out on top and the women admitted it was a set up in open court. Coca Cola wants to wave the flag and telling its clients not to go selling any unpatriotic substitute soda if there is a shortage.

"Greatest in the history of the world".... and for another hundred years?

Well, if you want to sell newspapers this is a good line. Who was going to debate it? Besides, half a million in presumed German losses is nothing to sneeze at . Funny though.... the story doesn't mention the allies losses. Of course defenders usually take fewer losses than attackers....everybody knew that..... something long ago learned regarding the fact that firing from a trench against an attacker in the open was a plus for the trench guys. If it weren't universally known WWI wouldn't be a trench war.

Brought "practically to a halt" is not so true in the next days news story. The meat grinder continues to grind.

https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... d-1/seq-1/

US is ready to follow Foch as the supreme French commander leading the allied forces. US forces have apparently not been the focus of a major German attack .....yet. At least the casualty lists have been pretty small as released to the press and nothing like what the French and the British have taken.

Since Congress declared war on Germany exactly a year before, you can imagine how many minutes the court was going to take to issue an opinion in this case.

Watch out for those subversive Germans! Free speech doesn't protect Americans of German ancestry from criticizing the President or the war if Congress can pass a bill to arrest them when they speak negatively. Because Teddy Roosevelt is against the bill a Washington paper is taking a stance in opposition to Teddy and, unlike Teddy, think that Freedom of Speech is a Constitutional concept that can have an exception when it comes to the President or the war. True red blooded Americans can criticize the President and can be clearly free to do so but if those evil supporters of German do... well it will all be obvious of course what their motive is...if their last name is German.

President makes a speech and watches a parade of troops a hundred years ago. The speech was to justify the war and whip up some enthusiasm for the next bond drive and the war in general. He starts off awarding the US intentions with the mantle of dispassionate justice seeker and ends with a we'll kill the bastards cheer leading statement. Obviously the kind of speech that was appropriate in the judgement of the listeners.

Meanwhile the US doesn't know it yet but Wilson will be sending US troops to Siberia to guard the Northern Russian rail line and lots of war material. The Japanese were seen as a potential threat to a nascent Russia as well as a sub set of revolutionaries from Russia who were destabilizing the new Russian government. The Japanese had already made overtures to the Allies to undertake what the US eventually did. There was also the possibility of German moves to feed on war stores, much of it sent by the US, in an unstable Russia. The troop movement wouldn't come to fruition for another four months in August of 1918.

Meanwhile... the Germans are raising hell in the Spring offensive and the British are also having trouble with the Irish who won't love them as their protecting mother country. And back home a politician is telling about a wondrous new device that was all claim and no truth ..if anything like it existed at all....although it would probably been better used to time baseball pitches or catch motorists speeding if it was like the radar gun of later decades.

The slaughter was terrific. Only nobody seemed to be terrified at the carnage. All fine when it was the Germans slaughtered but tomorrow the screw will turn and the headlines will not tell that story.

If you read the actual words of Haig's Order it becomes obvious that he had identified the solution to the German's Spring Offensive and was fully aware of the consequences of failure......

Atrocity stories were front page news a hundred years ago. Reading this one reminded me of the movie Platoon, which was fiction, or the actual horrific My Lai Massacre in the Vietnam war about a half century later. However, unlike many such WWI stories that were likely more propaganda rumor than truth, this one rings true because of the location. It was the scene of Russians massacring Jews in 1700's and the murder of Jews by the Nazi's in the second world war. Doubt seriously anybody checked religion in such an attack on civilians in 1918, but makes one wonder.

This particular town had been the HQ of the Imperial Russian Army for a while preceding this atrocity and the Czar had visited there while he was commander of the Russian forces.

A photo op that turned out badly...and painful.... for President Wilson. This was on the lawn of the White House. Tanks and photo ops would remain disastrous down through the years for politicians ...... remember Mike Dukakis?

And this was a British tank...not even American.
