Only himself to blame as he exited the wrong way  More proof, if proof were needed, that politicians think they know best!

A lady reporter gives her take on a tank ride. US troops get the best of 1200 Germans on a small section of the line. Meanwhile the Germans and British are fighting around Ypres. Ypres is pronounced "E pr uh" or something like phonetic. Another day of the spring offensive. And Marshal Foch thinks he has everything under control.

Wilson may not have enough sense to not touch a hot exhaust pipe but he wasn't about to become dictator in chief and preside as commander in chief over a system of military trials for "disloyal" citizens.

British get a bright idea. To stop the German subs they decided to sink some ships in the channel outlets to two submarine ports. Beats hunting for them all over the oceans of the world....if it could keep the subs in port in port and the ones out at sea from returning for resupply.

Tanks used by both sides in a major battle for the first time in history! At least that's what this newspaper proclaims.

Those damn Huns! French even painted some pictures to record how dastardly they were/ And.... officials vouched for the truth of the paintings! But.....why would they want a painting? Maybe it's one of those Picasso things from another war....but it's no Guernica in art value. Wonder where it is today?

During the war there were many such 'paintings' used in the many news sheets, journals, newspapers and books that were produced on both sides. These were created because of the lack of photographic evidence and the need to 'legitimize' the event in the eyes of the public.

This image, taken from a 6 volume set that was produced after the war entitled "The Popular Pistory of the Great War" edited by Sir J.A.Hammerton, is a drawing from the Illustrated London News. Cameras were not allowed into the House Of Commons in those days but non the less it was obviously an important moment in lead up to the start of the war, even though it represents a moment in time from 1911 and as is said many times "A picture is worth a thousand words" especially when some of the population can't read!

Mount Kemmel at Kemmelburg was held by the French who swore to defend it all costs and were subsequently overwhelmed by three divisions of Germans to the French one division. The French loss in dead was in many thousands because they would not surrender. A cemetery would be opened as a result and the cemetery has on the order of 5000 French graves. Eventually the hill would be retaken by combined British and American troops.
