And now the allies bring in the fat lady. She has the music now. All she has to do is sing.

Just goes to show how dangerous the papers can be and still are. Misinformation can cause all kinds of problems

Yep. It could have been another CNN, CNBC, moment of Hillary VS Trump during the 2016 election...but in those days they just said they weren't fed the correct news yesterday and just put in the today version. Same paper the next day added here. However, they had caused all sorts of celebration in New York the day before that couldn't be taken back as premature. Of Course Foch was kind of a dick wanting to kill a few more Germans and get a few more allies killed until getting some official signed humiliation of defeat from Germany.

They day before in the same paper:

Easy to say in hindsight 100 years on but at the time it was considered nonnegotiable for anything but a full, unconditional surrender.
I have said this many times before, The British and it's Empire plus the Americans were not fighting in their own country, on their land. The French and Belgians were and the French in particular had suffered horrendous losses. They wanted to see Germany punished AND left in a state that would not threaten France again.
Anything but unconditional surrender would be seen as weakness on the side of the Allies, especially with the turbulent political situation in Germany at the time.

One estimate is that about 40 million people in total died in WWI. A large part of that number civilians from all causes. On Armistice day the headlines tried to express the great relief in the ending. The true total approximate numbers weren't gathered yet for the civilians. One tally gave just military deaths of Europeans.... which was horrifyingly large. Little did anyone know at the time that the harsh, but not totally devastating, peace would cause a new unrest in Germany that would produce WWII in another couple of decades. Little could they know then.

American losses:
War Losses (USA) American losses in World War I were modest compared to those of other belligerents, with 116,516 deaths and approximately 320,000 sick and wounded of the 4.7 million men who served. The USA lost more personnel to disease (63,114) than to combat (53,402), largely due to the influenza epidemic of 1918
