A hundred years ago Submarine F-4 does not rise to the surface.
Later days 4-F meant not fit for duty. Maybe this was an omen of some sort.

I worked on/in the "Oberon" class subs at Cockatoo Dockyard in Sydney for years and being inside them in dry-dock is bad enough.
I was a Metrologist but also did MDI work (Marine dimensional inspections) and some of the places that I crawled into you wouldn't believe!
'Confined Space' allowance was paid for some areas, like in the battery space, but not in such areas as the crew normally worked.
Never went for a dive although I could have arranged it.
These were top (no pun intended) class boats.
