WWI super dreadnought proposed by US

Post by Niner » Sat Feb 25, 2017 3:04 pm

Noticed this story in a paper from a hundred years ago. What was proposed was a super battleship. 80.000 long tons, 975 feet long and 108 feet on the beam. Actual largest WWI US battleships that were in the US fleet were around 27,000 long tons and 573 feet long and with beams around 90 feet at the largest. "New York Class".

In WWII the US Alabama battleship was 35,000 tons and 680 feet long and 108 foot beam.

Apparently the US decided it was too much money, wouldn't fit in with the fleet and could only enter a few ports. Can't find any evidence of any like the proposed ship that were ever built.

No one ever built an 80,000 ton battle ship, although at 73,000 tons, the Japanese battleships
Yamato and Musashi were close, and at 18",they had the largest guns ever mounted and were 862' overall.
The largest guns on US ships were 16", the Iowa class which were eventually 58,000 tons and 887' overall.
The US was going to build the Montana class at 72,000 tons and 921' overall, but the war ended before they were built.
The newest carrier, USS Gerald Ford is only 185' longer that the Montana class would have been........

How long were you on the HMS Crofton? Looks like a better place to be than the "ships" that
Robert and I served on............

I served in the Royal Navel Reserve Vern as an RO2(T) - Radio Operator (Tactical) which meant my position was on the bridge hoisting flags and sending by flashing light when we were mine sweeping.
I was based in the Comms Training Centre in Birminghham (which is about as far from the sea as you can get in the UK!)
HMS Crofton was our depot ship and so we provided crew for her.

Must have been more fun to sweep for mines with a ship than with your feet......like me and Vern did. :loco:

It was actually the guy in front of me, or possibly the guy in front of him that tripped
the Chi-Com grenade booby trap. But I still have a small "souvenir" in my right hand, it shows
up really well on x-rays.........
