Colette Gravity Pistol, Calibre 11 mm, (rocket ball type) used for 'Parlor' shooting.
Invented by a Herman G Nicholas and covered by 8 patents from 1850-54. First shown in 1855.
It held 20 rounds of ammunition which was gravity fed to the breech by half cocking the gun and holding it muzzle up.
Once the round is in the breech going to full cock closes the breech and readies the gun for firing.

Thanks for the link Eoin. That's an interesting pistol. I imagine the air pistol of various sorts made it obsolete from a cost of ammunition standpoint.
