Today's question.........
This is something I didn't know until recently looking at a conversion chart.
And the question is.........
Why are they referred to as 7.62x54r and 7.62x39 when they both have a bullet
diameter of 7.92 (.311) ???
Anyone ?????

Re: Today's question.........
Land diameter vs. groove diameter. Think .303 British (actually .311)

Thanks deadin.
I guess I was wrong in thinking that it was the diameter of the bullet that determined what
size the round was called, and not the lands and grooves of the barrel.

Re: Today's question.........
Down here on the top of the world we have some weird restrictions on licenced pistols (no such restrictions imposed on criminal's guns); there are 'high' and'low' calibres, I can have a .357 Magnum 'cause that's a low calibre and measures under the .38 limit, but I can't have a .38-40 (except in a black powder pistol) 'cause that's a high calibre being a true .401.

Re: Today's question.........
The Russian 7.62x54r has a rimmed case (r stands for rimmed) much like a .22 BUT also the case is tapered.
